PITMAN ARM REPLACEMENT
(CLAMP BOLT TYPE)
REMOVAL
1. Rem ove cotter pin, nut, and w asher from
connecting link to Pitm an arm ball stud.
2. Rem ove ball stud from Pitman arm by
striking with a ham m er on edge of Pitman arm
adjacent to ball stud, w hile using a large ham m er
as a back-up tool on the opposite edge of arm .
NOTE: DO NOT ham m er on the Pitm an arm
without supporting, or backing arm up with a heavy
object as damage could occur to steerin g gear.
3. Rem ove Pitm an arm clamp bolt nut, w ash­
er , and bolt.
4. If n e c essa r y , in se r t a w edge-shaped tool
into the Pitm an arm sp lit and spread sligh tly. R e­
move Pitm an arm from shaft by tapping lightly on
the b ack -sid e of the Pitm an arm .
INSTALLATION
1. Note direction of connecting link ball stud
tapered hole. Sm all end of the tapered hole should
fa ce toward left sid e of the veh icle.
2. P osition Pitm an arm on the secto r shaft,
being careful to align serra tio n s, and lightly tap
arm until Pitm an arm clamp bolt hole and groove
in secto r shaft a re in alignm ent.
NOTE: DO NOT ham m er ex c e ssiv e ly to fo r ce
Pitm an arm onto se cto r shaft. It may be n e ce ssa r y
to sligh tly spread the Pitman arm to fa cilitate in ­
stallation.
3. Install bolt, w asher, and nut and tighten nut
to 90-110 foot-pounds torque.
4. Connect connecting link ball stud to Pitm an
arm , in sta ll w asher, and tighten nut to 125-150
foot-pounds torque. Advance to next slo t and in stall
new cotter pin.
PITMAN ARM REPLACEMENT
(TAPERED SHAFT TYPE)
REMOVAL
1. R em ove cotter pin and nut from connecting
link to Pitm an arm ball stud.
2. Rem ove ball stud from Pitm an arm by
striking with a hammer on edge of Pitm an arm
adjacent to ball stud, while using a la rg er ham m er
a s a back-up tool on the opposite edge of arm .
NOTE: DO NOT ham m er on the Pitm an arm
without supporting, or backing arm up with a heavy
object as damage could occur to steerin g gear
3. Remove Pitm an shaft to Pitman arm r e ­
taining nut and lock w asher.
4. Using p uller (J -2 1 143), rem ove Pitm an arm
NOTE: B e su re to inspect Pitm an shaft and in­
ternal
serratio n s for worn or damaged a r e a s.
INSTALLATION
1. P osition Pitm an arm on Pitm an shaft, being
careful to properly alig n .serra tio n s.
2. Install lock w asher and nut and torque to
"Specifications" liste d
3. Install connecting link ball stud to Pitm an
arm and torque nut to "Specifications" liste d at
end of this section .
4. Install cotter pin in connecting link ball nut.
