You can obtain more detailed output by using the -
s
option with the
command.
To test the Internet connection to a company called
otherco,
you
might use a command similar to:
# ping otherco.com
otherco.com is alive
The Sun Network File System (NFS) allows you to set up distributed
filesystems enabling files and applications on one host to be shared
across the network by other hosts. This section provides a brief
overview of how to set up a distributed filesystem using NFS.
File Sharing and Save and Resume
:) Many problems associated with Save and Resume arise when file sharing
is being used. This is particularly true if you are running applications
located on a server machine. The scenario is frequently as follows: you
power off with a Save; remove your SPARCbook from the network; and
then attempt a Resume with no network connection. The server machine
cannot be reached and the Resume cannot complete because your
SPARCbook cannot Resume the same operational state.
:) To prevent this situation arising you should always observe the following
precaution before powering off with a Save and removing your SPARCbook
from the network.
Always unmount shared directories and comment out any lines in the
/ etc/vfstab file that automount an NFS filesystem by placing a# at the
start of the line.
