Troubleshooting the Sander

Trouble
Sander will not start.
Sanding belt clogs
too quickly.
Sanding belt will not
run, or slips on the
rollers.
Sanding belt keeps
triggering the limit
switches.
Machine takes too
long to stop after
emergency switch is
activated.
Grinding noise when
brake is activated.
Too much rounding
occurs along edges
when solid wood is
sanded.
Probable Cause
No incoming power.
Low voltage.
Loose wiring.
Starting switch is defective.
Motor is defective.
Grit of sanding belt is too fine.
Too much material being sanded off.
Wood is too oily.
Too much dirt or glue on the wood.
Wood is too moist.
Air valve switch is Off.
Emergency stop button is engaged.
Limit switches are activated.
Insufficient air pressure causing belt
to slip on rollers.
Dust or debris on conveyor rollers
Tracking adjustment/oscillation is not
correct.
Air flow control is closed.
Sensors are blocked on the air
cylinder bracket.
Air pressure is too low.
Brake pads are worn.
Brake pads are worn.
Too much material is being removed,
making the contact drum press too
tightly.
Remedy
Check that sander is connected to
power, fuses are not blown or circuit
breakers are not tripped.
Check voltage at power source.
Inspect and remedy any loose
connections on sander.
Replace switch.
Replace motor.
Choose a larger grit of sanding paper.
Reduce the amount of material being
removed.
Choose different stock.
Choose cleaner stock.
Allow wood to dry before sanding.
Turn on air valve.
Disengage the stop button.
Position sanding belt so it is between
the limit switches.
Make sure air pressure regulator is
set at 75 to 80 PSI (page 9).
Clean conveyor rollers.
Set tracking correctly. See page 12
and 13.
Open air flow control (page 13).
Clean the sensor areas on the
cylinder bracket. See page 13.
Set air pressure to 75 to 80 PSI.
Replace brake pads.
Replace brake pads (rotor may need
turning also).
Reduce the amount of material being
removed.
