Maintenance
General
For the safety of maintenance personnel as well as others who
might be exposed to hazards associated with maintenance
activities, the safety related work practices of NFPA 70E. parts
II and I l l , should always be followed when working on electri­
cal equipment. Maintenance personnel should be trained i n
t h e safety practices, procedures a n d requirements that per­
tain to their respective job assignments. This manual should
b e reviewed and retained i n a location readily accessible for
reference during maintenance of this equipment.
The customer must establish a periodic maintenance pro­
g ram to ensure trouble-free and safe operation The frequency
of inspection, periodic cleaning and preventive maintenance
sched u l e will depend upon the operation conditions. NFPA
Publication 708. 'Electrical Equipment Maintenance' may be
used as a guide to establish such a program. A preventive
maintenance program is not intended to cover recon­
ditioning or major repair, but should be designed to
reveal, if possible, the need for such actions in time to
prevent malfunctions during operation.
Service Conditions and Maintenance Intervals
'Usual" and "Unusual' service conditions for Low Voltage
Metal-Enclosed Switchgear are defined in ANSI C37.20. 1 ,
sections 3 and 7. 1 . Generally, 'usual service conditions' are
defined as an environment in which the equipment is not
exposed to excessive dust. acid fumes. damagi n g chemi­
cals. salt air, rapid or frequent changes in temperature.

This definition is subject to a variety of interpretations. Be­
cause of this, you are best served by adjusting maintenance
and lubrication intervals based on your experience with the
actual service environment.
The frequency of required maintenance depends o n the
nature of the service conditions; the more severe the condi­
tions. the more frequently that maintenance i s needed.
Table 3 gives service and lubrication intervals for type RL
circ�.,;it breakers applied under ANSI ·usual Service Condi­
tions'. This table i ndicates that R L circuit breakers (with 'LM'
i n the type designation o n the ratin g label) have a five (5) year
:.1a:ntenance interval.
Regardless of the length of the maintenance (rubrication)
i nterval, the tripping system should be checked and exer­
cised annualiy, and the circuit breaker should be i n s pected
and exercised annually.
Always inspect a circuit breaker which has interrupted a
heavy fault current.

The above list does not represent an exhaustive s urvey of
maintenance steps necessary t o ensure safe operation of the
equipment. Particular applications may require further proce­
dures. Should further information be desired or should par­
ticular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for
the Purchaser's purposes, the matter should be referred to the
local Siemens sales office.

The use of unauthorized parts in the repair of
the equipment or tampering by unqualified
personnel will result in dangerous conditions

equipment damage. Follow all safety
instructions contained herein.
Lubrication
Lubrication should be a part of the servic ing procedure. Old
grease should be removed from bearing pins and other
non-current carrying rotating or sliding surfaces. They should
be wiped with a thi n film of Diester based synthetic l u b ricant.
such as Beacon P-325 ( Exxon).
Grease with care to avoid getting grease o n insulatin g mem­
bers, since it may affect the die lectric strength. Faces of
arcing contacts and faces of main contacts should not be
lubricated. The rubbing s u rfaces of the main contact fingers ,
arcing contact fingers a n d h i n g e contact fingers are l u bri­
cated with a coating of Siemens contact l ubricant. 1 5- 1 7 1 -
370-002. I f d u st has accumulated, disassembly may be
necessary to clean and rel u bricate these points. See Contact
Replacement. Page 1 3 and Lubrication Chart, Table 5.
Recommended Annual RL Circuit Breaker
Inspection Procedure
A s u ggested procedure to follow during A nnual I nspections:
1 . De-energ ize the primary and control circuits.
2. With the cubicle door closed. rack the circuit breaker to
the DISCON NECTED position
3. Open the cubicle door, and remove the c i rc:.;it break.er
from the cubicle.
