cylinder
bore in which it

going
to
be
used.

of the ring with a fee

gauge
(F ig. 42).
If
the
ring gap
is
less
th
a
n

recommended lower
lim it,
try
another
ring
set.

Check
the
ring
side
clea rance
of the compression
rin
gs
with
a feeler
gauge
in serted
be twee
n
the
ring
a
nd
its
lower
land (Fig.
43).
The
gauge
should slide
freely around the entire
ring
circumfe rence without
binding.
An
y
wear
th at
occurs will
form
a step
at the
inner
port
ion of
the
lower
land.
If
the
lower
lands
have
high
steps,
the
piston
should
be
replaced.
Fitting

Pins. The piston
pin
fit should
be a
li
ght
thumb press fit
at
norma
l
te mpera
ture
(70°
F). Sta

ard
piston
pins
are color coded
green.

the

in the piston
must
be
reamed,
use a
n
expans io
n-type,
pilo
ted
reamer.
Place
the reamer
in
a vise and revolve
the piston
aro
und
the
reamer. Set
the
reamer
to the
size
of
th
e
pin
bo
re,
then
expand
th
e
reamer
sli ghtl
y
and
tr
ial ream
the pin
bore. Take a
li
ght cut. Use a
pilot
sleeve of
the nea rest
s
ize
to main
-
tain
alig
nment
of
the
bores.
C
heck
th
e
hole
size,
using the
new
piston pin
.
If
the
bore
is
small, ex-
pand the reamer
slightl
y
and
make
another c
ut. Repeat the
procedure
until
the proper
fit
is
obtained
.
C heck
the pisto
n pin for

t
in the respec tive
rod bushing.

necessary, rea

hone
the
bus hing to fit the
