You might notice that occasionally the battery gauge will
fluctuate with the same battery. This occurs because some
operating modes, such as
consume more power than other modes. This will cause the
battery gauge to indicate that your battery level is lower,
because battery operating time in those modes is shorter.
When you switch to a mode that requires less power, like
Playback, the battery gauge may go up, indicating that
there is more operating time left in the battery if you stay in
that mode.

Extending Battery Life

Here are some tips for extending battery life:
Turn off the Image Display and use the viewfinder instead
when framing pictures and video. Leave the Image Display
off whenever possible.
Change the

Minimize the use of flash by setting your camera to
Flash, instead of

Use optical zoom only when necessary to minimize moving
the lens (see
Minimize unnecessary power cycling. If you expect to
average more than two picture every five minutes, leave the
camera on with the Image Display off, rather than turning
off the camera after each shot. This minimizes the number of
times the lens must extend and retract.
