3. Loosen the locknut on the turnbuckle (Fig. 45).
4. Rotate the turnbuckle toward the rear of the mower to
increase the tension on the belt. Rotate the turnbuckle
toward the front of the mower to decrease the tension
on the belt (Fig. 45).
Note: The eyebolt threads on both ends of the
turnbuckle should be engaged a minimum of 5/16 inch
(8 mm).

Adjusting the Blade Brake

1. Disengage the blade control (PTO) lever and set the
parking brakes.
2. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop
before leaving the operating position.
3. If necessary, adjust the spring mounting bolts so that the
blade brake pad rubs against the pulley edges (Fig. 46).

4. Adjust the nut at the end of the blade brake rod until
there is 1/8–3/16 inch (3–5 mm) between the nut and
the spacer (Fig. 46).
5. Engage the blades, and ensure that the blade brake pad
no longer contacts the pulley edges.

Adjusting the Grass/Mud
Scraper
1. Loosen the locknut that holds the scraper to the engine
frame (Fig. 47).

2. Rotate the scraper until it aligns with the center of the
pulley grooves (Fig. 47).
3. Tighten the locknut (Fig. 47).
Note: The scraper must not contact the pulley on the sides
or bottom of the grooves. Adjust it if necessary.
1. Remove the locknut, bolt, spring, and spacer that hold
the deflector to the mounts (Fig. NO TAG).

Replacing the Grass Deflector

Warning
An uncovered discharge opening could allow the
lawn mower to throw objects in the operator's or
bystander's direction and result in serious injury.
Also, contact with the blade could occur.
Never operate the lawn mower unless you install a
cover plate, a mulch plate, or a grass chute and
catcher.
1. Remove the locknut, bolt, spring and spacer holding the
deflector to the pivot brackets (Fig. 48). Remove
damaged or worn grass deflector.
2. Place spacer and spring onto grass deflector. Place the L
end of spring behind deck edge.
Note: Make sure the L end of spring is installed behind
deck edge before installing the bolt as shown in figure 48.
