About This Guide This booklet is divided into three sections: Ready..., Set..., and Go... Here’s what you’ll find in each section: Ready... How to make sure the network is ready, where you can set up your system, and what you should find in each of the boxes.
Make Sure the Network Is Ready ® Before you begin installing the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 system, you should make sure that the network is ready. The document Preparing Your Network for Collaboration contains worksheets that will help you get the network ready.
Choose Tabletop or Cart Before you unpack all of the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 components, decide where you want to set up the system. You can set it up either on a tabletop or on a cart, and you can position the computer box either horizontally or as a tower:...
Unpack the System Carton The basic system comes packed in one carton. This carton contains the computer box, software, documentation, camera, cables, and so on. If you’ve ordered options with the system, such as a cart, a monitor, or another camera, the system may have come packed in five or more cartons.

Unpack the Camera 3. The third box in the system carton contains the main camera. Depending on the type of system you ordered, you received either the PictureTel 80 or the PictureTel 70 camera. For the PictureTel 80 camera, this box also contains some of the audio cables you will need for the system. PictureTel 80 PictureTel 70 Dynamic Locating...
Unpack the Computer Box 4. The fourth box in the system carton contains the computer box and a tray. For information about what you’ll find in the tray, see the next page. Note: The serial number for the system is printed on the back of the computer box. You should record this serial number in case you need it for future reference.
Unpack the Microphone and Cables The tray inside the fourth box holds the PowerMic microphone and its cable, the camera cable, three ™ audio cables, the video cable, and, if you ordered them, WAN cables, such as ISDN cables, V.35 cables, or RS-449 cables.
Unpack the ImageShare If you have a PictureTel 970, your system comes standard with an ImageShare device. If you have a ™ PictureTel 960, you may have also received an ImageShare if you ordered it as an option with the system. The ImageShare lets you easily add video and audio input and output devices, such as a laptop computer, to the system.
Unpack the Optional Cart(s) Here’s the Premier Cart set up with a monitor on it: If you ordered a second cart to hold a second monitor, you should set it up at this time as well. You can order the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 system with a variety of monitor and projector options or with no monitor at all.
Unpack the Monitor(s) and Projector(s) • If you ordered one monitor, you received an SVGA/XGA monitor. In the carton with the SVGA/XGA monitor, you’ll find the monitor power cable and the VGA cable. Depending on your monitor, other cables may also be included; however, you do not use these cables with the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 system.
Before connecting an option to the system, read the documentation for that option or see your system administrator. For information about connecting a VCR to the system, see the PictureTel 900 Series Collaboration System Administrator’s Guide.

Set Up the PictureTel 80 Camera without a Bose Speaker • If you don’t have a cart with a Bose speaker (such as the Premier Cart), but do have a PictureTel 80 camera and a single-monitor system, see the Installing the PictureTel 80 Dynamic Locating Camera document for complete information about setting it up.
Set Up the PictureTel 70 Camera without a Bose Speaker • If you don’t have a cart with a Bose speaker (such as the Premier Cart), but do have a PictureTel 70 camera and a single-monitor system, see the Installing the PictureTel 70 Room Camera document for complete information about setting it up.
Set Up the PictureTel 80 Camera with a Bose Speaker • If you have a PictureTel 80 camera, a cart that has a Bose speaker (such as the Premier Cart), and a single-monitor system, you must connect the audio cables to the Bose speaker inside the cart. See the Installing a Collaboration System on the Premier Cart document for complete information about connecting the camera when you have a Premier Cart.
Set up the PictureTel 70 Camera with a Bose Speaker • If you have a PictureTel 70 camera, a cart that has a Bose speaker (such as the Premier Cart), and a single-monitor system, you must connect the audio cables to the Bose speaker inside the cart. Set Up the ISDN Cables Depending on the type of network cables you ordered, your system may have come with WAN cables, such as ISDN, V.35, or RS-449 cables. • If you have the four ISDN network cables, here’s how to connect them: ISDN NT-1 Boxes: In the United States and Canada, most ISDN lines that come directly from an ISDN service provider are U interface ISDN.
Set Up the V.35 or RS-449 Cables • If you have V.35 or RS-449 network cables, you have to connect those cables from the computer box to an IMUX. Contact your IMUX supplier to make sure you have the proper cables. Also, see the documentation that came with the IMUX for complete information about setting up the network cables with an IMUX.
Set Up the Power Cable You connect the power cable to the system differently depending on whether or not you have a Premier Cart. • If you don’t have a Premier Cart, connect the power cable like this: ISDN • If you do have a Premier Cart, see the Installing a Collaboration System on the Premier Cart document for information on how to connect the power cable to the cart.
Set Up Your Room Now that you’ve set up all the hardware, you’ll want to make sure you get the best performance from the system by optimizing the room setup. Here are some tips: • Lighting: Lighting is important for producing the best video image. If possible, equip the room with indirect fluorescent lighting.
Turn the System On Now that you’ve set up the hardware,you’re ready to start up the system:Push the power button on. The power button is located on the front of the computer box. Use the keyboard to select a language from the list that appears on the screen. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
