    Remove the cover. CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components. Turning Off Your Computer CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.

    Removing and Installing Components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Recommended Tools The procedures in this document may require the following tools: • Small flat-blade screwdriver • Phillips screwdriver • Small plastic scribe Removing the Cover Before Working Inside Your Computer .

    Installing the Cover Place the cover on the computer. Slide the computer cover towards the front of the chassis until it is fully engaged. Tighten the screw in clockwise direction to secure the computer cover. After Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Removing the Front Bezel Before Working Inside Your Computer .

    Installing the Front Bezel Insert the hooks along the bottom edge of the front panel into the slots on the chassis. Rotate the bezel toward the computer to engage the front panel retention clips until they click into place. Install the cover. After Working Inside Your Computer .
  • Page 11 Lift the drive cage using the handle and flip over the drive cage. Lift the drive cage and remove the data cable and power cable from the back of the hard drive.

    Remove the drive cage from the computer. Installing the Drive Cage Place the drive cage on the edge of the computer near the front bezel to allow access to the cable connectors on the hard drive. Connect the data cable and power cable to the back of the hard drive. Flip over the drive cage and insert it into the chassis.

    Removing the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Card Before Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Remove: a. cover b. front bezel c. drive cage Disconnect the cables from the WLAN card. Pry the clips on the connector till the card pops-out. Lift and remove the WLAN card from the computer.

    Slide and remove the connector from the computer. Installing the WLAN Card Align and place the connector inside the slot of the computer. Align the antenna puck on the connector. Tighten the screws to secure the antenna puck to the WLAN card connector.

    Removing the Optical Drive Before Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Remove: a. cover b. front bezel c. drive cage Press the optical-drive latch and then slide the optical drive out. Flex the optical-drive bracket and then remove the optical-drive from the bracket. Installing the Optical Drive Insert the optical drive in the optical drive bracket.

    Installing the Hard Drive Insert the hard drive into the hard-drive bracket. Slide the hard drive back into the drive cage. Tighten the screws to secure the hard drive to the drive cage. Install the drive cage. Install the front bezel. Install the cover.

    Memory Module Guidelines To ensure optimal performance of your computer, observe the following general guidelines when configuring your system memory: • Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed (for example, 2 GB and 4 GB). But, all populated channels must have identical configurations.

    Installing the Memory Align the notch on the memory-card with the tab on the system-board connector. Press down on the memory module until the release tabs spring back to secure it in place. Install the drive cage. Install the front bezel. Install the cover.

    Installing the Coin-Cell Battery Place the coin-cell battery into its slot on the system board. Press the coin-cell battery downward until the release latch springs back into place and secures it. Install the heat sink. Install the drive cage. Install the front bezel. Install the cover.

    Remove the screws that secure the system fan to the chassis. Remove the fan from the chassis. Installing the System Fan Place the system fan in the chassis. Tighten the screws that secure the fan to the chassis. Thread the system fan connector cables to the chassis clips. Connect the system fan cable to the system board.
  • Page 21 Pull out the speaker cable from beneath the system fan cable and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) antennae (if installed). Release the latch and rotate the speaker.

    Remove the speaker from the chassis. Installing the Internal Speaker Place the speaker on the appropriate location of the rear end of the chassis. Rotate until the latch is secured in place. Route the speaker cable beneath the system fan cable and Wireless Local Area network (WLAN) antennae (if installed).

Remove the screw and pull the power switch board out of the computer. Installing the Power Switch Slide the power-switch through the front of the computer and tighten the screw.

    Removing the Input/Output(I/O) Panel Before Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Remove: a. cover b. front bezel c. drive cage Release the power cable and I/O cable from the chassis clip. Remove the screws that secures the I/O panel to the computer. Slide the I/O panel towards the left of the computer to release it and pull the I/O panel along with its cable out of the computer.

    Installing the Input/Output(I/O) Panel Align the Input/Output panel with the Input/Output frame and tighten the screws to secure the Input/Output panel. Insert the Input/Output panel into the slot on the chassis front. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws to secure the Input/Output panel to the computer. Connect the Input/Output panel data cable to the system board.

    Remove the screws that secures the power supply to the chassis. Slide the power supply inward and lift the power supply unit out of the computer. Installing the Power Supply Unit Place the power supply in the chassis and slide outward to secure it. Tighten the screws that secure the power supply to the back of the computer.

    Connect the cables to the system board. Install the heat sink. Install the intrusion switch. Install the drive cage. Install the front bezel. Install the cover. After Working Inside Your Computer . 10. Follow the procedures in Removing the Heat Sink Before Working Inside Your Computer .
  • Page 28 Press the release lever down and outward to release the fan retention hook. Lift the top portion of the heat sink/fan assembly. Loosen the captive screws that secure the heat sink/fan assembly to the system board. Lift the heat sink/fan assembly, and remove it from the computer.

    Lay the assembly with the fan facing downward, and with the thermal grease facing upward. Installing the Heat Sink Place the heat sink into the chassis. Tighten the captive screws to secure the heat sink to the system board. Press the release lever down and inwards to secure the fan retention hook. Connect the heat sink cable to the system board.

    Installing the Processor Insert the processor into the processor socket. Ensure the processor is properly seated. Press the release lever down and then move it inward to secure it with the retention hook. Install the heat sink. Install the drive cage. Install the front bezel.

    Installing the System Board Align the system board to the port connectors and place the system board in the chassis. Tighten the screws securing the system board to the chassis. Connect all the cables to the system board. Install the speaker. Install the WLAN Card.

    Password Type Description Setup password Password that you must enter to access and make changes to the BIOS settings of your computer. NOTE: Your computer is shipped with the system and setup password feature disabled.

    Diagnostics If you experience a problem with your computer, run the ePSA diagnostics before contacting Dell for technical assistance. The purpose of running diagnostics is to test your computer's hardware without requiring additional equipment or risking data loss. If you are unable to fix the problem yourself, service and support personnel can use the diagnostics results to help you solve the problem.
