Off-Season Storage
The following steps should be taken to prepare your lawn mower
and engine for storage.
Mower
Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in
Lubrication section on page 17.
Apply coat of chassis grease to mower's cutting blade to
prevent rusting.
Store mower in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to
corrosive materials, such as fertilizer.
When storing any type of power equipment in a poorly
ventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to
rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the
equipment, especially cables and all moving parts of your lawn
mower before storage.
Battery (If Equipped)
The battery must be stored with a full charge. Extended
storage of a discharged battery will reduce life and capacity
of the battery. For optimal battery life, charge the battery
once per month while in storage.
Remove electric start push key and keep in a safe place out
of the reach of children.
Engine
Fuel System
Fuel can become stale when stored over 30 days. Stale fuel
causes acid and gum deposits to form in the fuel system or on
essential carburetor parts. To keep the fuel fresh, use Briggs
& Stratton® Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment & Stabilizer,
available wherever Briggs & Stratton genuine service parts are
sold.
There is no need to drain gasoline from the engine if a fuel
stabilizer is added according to instructions. Run the engine
for two minutes to circulate the stabilizer throughout the fuel
system before storage.
If gasoline in the engine has not been treated with a fuel
stabilizer, it must be drained into an approved container. Run the
engine until it stops from lack of fuel. The use of a fuel stabilizer
in the storage container is recommended to maintain freshness.
Engine Oil
While the engine is still warm, change the engine oil.
NOTE: Store the unit level (normal operating position). If the unit
is tipped for storage, the fuel tank must be empty and the spark
plug side must be up. If the fuel tank is not empty and if the unit
is tipped in any other direction, it may be difficult to start due to
oil or gasoline contaminating the air filter and/or the spark plug.
