Poor image quality (low resolution, contrast too low or too high)
Causes
No cover glass is attached to the slide.
Cover glass is too thick or too thin.
Slide is upside down.
Lenses or specimen are dirty or dusty.
Aperture diaphragm and field diaphragm
is opened or closed too far.
Condenser position is not correct.
No immersion oil is applied to the tip of
the oil-immersion objective.
Nikon immersion oil is not used for
oil-immersion observation.
Air bubbles in immersion oil.
Immersion oil adhering to the tip of the
dry type objective (especially 40x
objective).
Correction ring of objective is not in
right position (when using objectives
with correction rings).
No-cover-glass-objective is used for the
specimen with the cover glass.

Corrective Measures
Attach a cover glass 0.17 mm thick.
Use a cover glass of the specified
thickness (0.17 mm).
Turn over the slide so that the cover
glass faces up.
Move either "stage, condenser, objective
or field lens unit" following the causes
described in "Dirt or dust in the
viewfield." and check which parts are
dirty, then clean them as appropriate.
Close or open properly. (P.15, 18)
If the microscope is equipped with a
field diaphragm, correct positioning so
that the field diaphragm image is
focused on the specimen surface. (P.14)
If the microscope is not equipped with a
field diaphragm, position the condenser
slightly lower than the upper limit.
Apply Nikon immersion oil to the
objective. (P.22)
Use Nikon immersion oil. (P.22)
Remove bubbles. (P.22)
Clean the objective. (P.23)
Adjust the position suitable for the cover
glass.
Use the standard objective for cover
glassed specimen.
