De-Scaling Your Brewer

Mineral content in water varies from place to place. Depending on the mineral
content of the water in your area, calcium deposits or scale may build up in
your Brewer. Scale is non-toxic, but left unattended, it can hinder Brewer
performance. De-scaling your Brewer helps maintain the heating element
and other internal parts of the Brewer that come in contact with water.
The Brewer should be de-scaled every 3-6 months using to ensure optimal
performance. It is possible for calcium deposits to build up faster, making it
®
necessary to de-scale more often. The Symptoms of scale build up are slow
brewing and/or short cups.
The following procedure outlines the steps required to prepare the Brewer
for the addition of the commercial citric acid Descale Solution (PN # 5026)
available from Keurig, Inc.
1. Unplug the Brewer from the power supply.
2. Disconnect or interrupt the external water supply feeding the Brewer.
3. Drain the Hot Water and Cold Water Tanks (see Draining the Brewer
instructions on page 17).
4. Remove the two screws located on the back, top, left of the Brewer.
Remove the Top Cover to gain access to the internal Cold Water Tank and
expose the Descaling Solution Access Port.
5. Reconnect the power supply.
6. Proceed with the descaling procedure on page 17.

De-Scaling Instructions

A. PREPARE
Step 1: Prepare at least 40 oz. of commercial citric acid Descale Solution.
You will also need a large ceramic mug (do not use a paper cup)
and access to a sink for discarding hot liquid.
B. FILL AND CLEAN
Step 1: Pour 40 oz. of Descale Solution into the Cold Water Tank through the
Access Port. Turn on the Brewer – the Brewer will automatically fill
and begin heating.
Step 2: When the LCD displays "Ready," place a large mug on the Drip Tray,
select the largest brew volume, and press the BREW Button.
Once the solution begins to exit the

Brewer, lift the Handle just enough to halt the brew process. Let the
Brewer sit for 40 minutes.
Step 3: At the end of 40 minutes, lower the Handle. The Brewer should
complete the brew (do not be concerned if the Brewer does not
complete the brew). Pour the dispensed liquid into the sink.
Step 4: Turn off the Brewer, unplug it, and drain Hot Water and Cold Water
Tanks using the Drain Tubes on back of Brewer.
C. RINSE
Step 1: Manually fill the Cold Water Tank with 40 oz. of fresh water
and drain. Repeat 2 more times.
Step 2: Reconnect the water supply, power supply and turn on the Brewer.
Step 3: Conduct a hot water brew cycle (see page 9) and discard hot water
brew into the sink. Repeat until all Descale Solution is no longer
evident. Remember to open and close the Brewer Handle between
each hot water brew cycle.
