Switch position 1
Ignition is on.
All electrical equipment can be switched on.
The warning lights light up for a lamp check.
Please note the description of the individual warn-
ing lights.
When turning the key to position 1, relieve the
I>
steering lock with a slight steering movement.
Note
To conserve battery power at low rpm (traffic
jams, town driving etc.), switch off all electrical
consumers which are not needed at that moment.
Switch position 2
Starting the engine
Turn the key from position 1 to position 2.

The clutch pedal must be depressed fully
before the starter will engage.
The first operation of the starter is ended automat-
ically when the engine starts.
If the engine does not start, subsequent starter
operations will not be ended automatically.
If the engine does not start at the first time or
stalls at any time, the key must be returned to
position O.
When the engine is running, the warning lights
should go off. If a light does not go off, take
appropriate action as indicated in this manual.
Switching engine off
Turn the ignition key from position 1 to

position O.

Warning!
Risk of an accident.
The steering wheel will lock and will cause
loss of steering.
Never remove key from the ignition lock or turn

the key off while the vehicle is moving.
To avoid battery run-down, always remove the
I>
ignition key from the ignition lock.
Please observe the chapter "SATTERY" on
Page 155.
Turn the steering wheel until the steering lock
I>
is engaged.
Gong
If you leave the key in the ignition/steering lock, a
gong will sound when the driver's door is opened.
This is a reminder to remove the key.
