Environmental Stewardship
The Dell Design for Environment (DfE) program instills environmentally sound principles into
product design, with consideration of every stage of a product's life cycle, from raw material
selection to responsible end-of-life management. Dell has long worked to reduce or eliminate
the use of environmentally sensitive materials in products. Dell's design for recycling
includes:
Engineering
Every Dimension E520 undergoes Dell's rigorous series of engineering tests, which helps
ensure that users can enjoy cutting edge technology without the reliability issues often
associated with new technologies.
All the components are selected carefully and produced under processes monitored by our
Supplier Quality Engineering Group. After selection, our engineers exhaustively test them in
the system to ensure optimal performance with other components within the system.
Only after the rigorous testing is complete does our Manufacturing team then start building
the complete system in our facilities certified to the requirements of ISO9001-2000.
Software download process
Using a proprietary factory download process, the OS and software loaded on the Dimension
E520 are transferred to the hard drive using an automated script. The script allows each hard
drive image to be customized to the customer's configuration, but at the same time, errors
from human interaction are virtually eliminated.
The reproducibility of the hard drive image provided by the script allows each software
configuration to be unique, but still supported by the hundreds of hours of system-level testing
performed during platform development.
