The Speech Processor is designed to increase "talk power" by increasing the average power output via a sophisticated
compression technique. The result is improved intelligibility when conditions are difficult.

[MIC] Knob / [PROC] Knob
1. Adjust the [ MIC ] gain control for SSB use, as de-
scribed on page 85.
2. Press the [ PROC ] switch momentarily. The Red LED
imbedded in the switch will light up, confirming that
the Speech Processor is engaged.
3. Speaking in a normal voice, confirm that the meter is
within the ALC zone. If ALC is too high then reduce
microphone gain so that meter is within ALC zone.
4. Rotate the [ METER ] switch fully to the left, so as to
select "COM" (Compression). Confirm that the com-
pression level is within the 5 dB to 10 dB range.
It is recommended that you utilize the monitor function
and adjust the [ PROC ] knob to the most suitable posi-
tion.
To switch the Speech Procesor off, press the [ PROC ]
switch once more. The Red LED imbedded in the switch
will go out, confirming that the Speech processor is turned
off.

ROCESSOR
- SSB/AM M
Excessive advancement of the [ PROC ] control will
result in a degradation of the transmitted signal's
signal-to-noise ratio, thereby reducing intelligibil-
ity at the other end of the circuit.
If you have an after-market monitor connected
to the DISPLAY jack, you can observe the ef-
fect of your COMP level adjustments by view-
ing the wave-form on the "Oscilloscope" page
on the external monitor.
The Transmit Monitor is another helpful way
of verifying proper adjustment of the
Compresison level. By Pressing the [ MONI ]
switch and adjusting the [ MONI ] control for a
comfortable listening level while you are trans-
mitting, you will be able to hear the difference
in sound quality as you make adjustments.
The [ RF PWR ] control still controls the RF
power output, whether or not the Speech Pro-
cessor is engaged.
