To reduce
the red-eye
phenomenon
Set [RED EYE REDUCTION]
to [ON] in the SET UP settings (page 80). The flash
pre-strobes before recording to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. When [ON] is
selected and the mode dial is set to -) or m,
0 appears on the LCD screen.

When [ISO] is set to [AUTO] in the menu settings, the recommended shooting distance
using the built-in flash is 0.5 m to 2.8 m (19 314 inches to 9 feet 2 114 inches) at the W side,
and 0.6 m to I .4 m (19 314 inches to 4 feet 7 118 inches) at the T side. When it is not set to
[AUTO], the flash may be ineffective even if the flash level is changed.

Red-eye reduction may not produce the desired effects depending on individual differences,
the distance to the subject, if the subject does not see the pre-strobe, or other conditions.
l
The flash effect is not obtained easily when you use f forced flash in a bright location.
l
While charging the flash, the f flash charge lamp flashes. After the charging is complete,
the lamp goes out.
l
The flash does not function when recording moving images (excluding Clip Motion) or
recording in BURST2 mode.
* When you record images in a dark place with the camera set to 8 (no flash), the shutter
speed becomes slow, so using a tripod is recommended to prevent shaking.
Recording
images with the AF illuminator
The AF illuminator is fill light to focus on a subject easily. Set [AF ILLUMINATOR]
(page 80) to [ON] in the SET UP settings. %
appears on the LCD screen and the
AF illuminator emits light when the shutter button is pressed halfway until the focus
is locked.

If AF illuminator light does not reach the subject sufficiently or the subject has no contrast,
focus will not be achieved. (An approximate distance up to 2.4 m (7 feet 10 l/2 inches) at the
W side, up to 1.4 m (4 feet 7 118 inches) at the T side is recommended.)

In TWILIGHT mode, the AF illuminator will emit light only when the flash mode is set to
s (Forced flash).
l
Focus is achieved as long as AF illuminator light reaches the subject even if its light is
slightly out of the middle position of the subject.
l
The AF illuminator does not operate when adjusting focus manually.
l
The AF illuminator is a very bright light. Although it is safe to use, avoid shining it directly
into someone's eyes at a close distance.
