Service the spark plug as follows.
1 . Clean the area around the base of the spark
plug to keep dirt out of the engine upon re-
moval.
2. Remove the spark plug and check its condi-
tion. Replace it if it is badly worn or if re-use
is questionable. Clean it if it is re-useable.
NOTE: Do not clean the spark plug in a machine
that uses abrasive grit. Some grit could remain in
recesses and enter the engine, causing extensive
wear and damage.
3. Check the gap with a wire type feeler gauge.
Set the gap as shown in the following table by
carefully bending the side electrode.
4. Install the spark plug and torque to 18 to 20 ft.
lb.
Spark Plug Specifications
Inspect the spark plug as soon as it is removed
from the engine. The deposits on tip are a good
indicator of the general condition of piston rings,
valves and carburetor. Normal and faulty spark
plugs are shown in Figures 8-10 through 8-14.
