Before requesting service, make the below checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart
do not solve the problem, consult your dealer for instructions.
Power
No power
The unit is on but cannot be
operated.
The unit switches to standby
automatically.
Picture
No picture.
Television reception worsens
after connecting the unit.
Screen size is wrong.
On-screen messages do not
appear.
The grey background does not
appear.
Sound
No sound.
Low volume.
Distorted sound.
Cannot hear the desired audio
type.
Cannot switch audio during
stereo or NICAM broadcasts.
Displays
The display is dim.
"0:00" is flashing on the unit's
display.

Troubleshooting guide

≥Insert the mains lead securely into the household mains socket.
≥The unit is hot ("U14" appears on the display).
Wait for "U14" to disappear.
≥One of the unit's safety devices may have activated.
Reset the unit as follows:
1.Press [Í/I] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby.
If the unit doesn't switch to standby, press and hold [Í] for about 10 seconds. The unit is
forcibly switched to standby.
Alternatively, disconnect the mains lead, wait one minute, then reconnect it.
2.Press [Í/I] to turn the unit on.
≥This is a power saving feature. You can turn it off if you would prefer (Settings— Off Timer — Off).

Press [Í/I] to turn the unit on.
≥One of the unit's safety devices may have activated.
Press [Í/I] to turn the unit on.
≥Make sure the television's input setting (e.g., AV1) is correct.
≥This can occur because the signals are being divided between the unit and the television.
It can be solved by using a signal booster, available from audio-visual suppliers.
Consult your dealer if reception does not improve.
≥Check the settings on your television.
≥Check the settings for "TV Aspect", "4:3 TV Settings for DVD-Video" or "4:3 TV Settings for DVD-
RAM" in the Connection menu. (pages 16 and 77)
≥Go to Display in the SET UP menus and select "Automatic" for "On-Screen Messages".(page 77)
Press [STATUS] to show the on-screen messages constantly.
≥Go to Display in the SET UP menus and select "On" for "Grey Background". (page 77)
≥Check the connections. (pages 11 and 12)
≥Check the input mode on the amplifier if you have connected one.
≥Turn V.S.S. off if it causes distortion. (page 67)
≥Press [AUDIO] on the remote control to select the desired audio type. (page 22)
[DVD-R]
≥Go to Sound in the SET UP menus and choose the correct setting with "Billuingual Selection for
DVD-R". (page 76)
≥You have used digital connection. Connect to other equipment using audio cables (analogue
connection). (pages 11, 12 and 71)
≥You cannot change the audio type when using DVD-R.
≥Go to Display in the SET UP menus and change the display's brightness with "FL Display".

≥The clock is not set.
Go to Settings in the SET UP menus and set the clock with "Clock". (page 81)
