Controlling the System

BCS Commands

Precis DSP models can be controlled by entering BCS (Basic Control Structure) commands into a
terminal emulation program (e.g., HyperTerminal). BCS command equivalents for all DSP functionality
adjustments are provided for advanced users and programmers who wish to create their own control
programs; see the BCS Protocol Instruction Manual on the AMX AutoPatch CD or at www.amx.com.
PC Requirements for BCS
To enter BCS commands, the Precis DSP must be attached to a PC (see "Attaching an External
Controller," on page 17) running a terminal emulation program such as Windows
The settings on the PC serial communication software and the enclosure must correspond to each other.
For settings information, see the table on page 18.
When using HyperTerminal, command characters are entered and sent to the enclosure's CPU (the
command characters appear in HyperTerminal when the enclosure responds). When all of the entered
characters appear in HyperTerminal, the command has been successfully executed.
To establish communication between the Precis DSP and HyperTerminal:
1.
Open HyperTerminal (or other terminal emulation software program).
2.
Select the COM port and check that the settings match those in the Precis DSP Serial Port Settings
table on page 18.
3.
Click OK.
A short splash screen appears followed by "Ready" (see FIG. 8 below).
The system is ready to enter BCS commands to execute switches (see page 31).
HyperTerminal Splash Screen
When power is applied to the enclosure, HyperTerminal displays a short splash screen followed by
"Ready". An example of a short splash screen is illustrated in FIG. 8 (your system's splash screen may
differ slightly).

Precis DSP models display advanced system information when the command ~scr! is entered (see
Appendix A on page 33). For information on checking the hardware version, see page 35.
