C_ption
Many programs
are encoded
with closed-captioning
information,
which lets you display the audio porti(m of a program
as text
on the TV screen. Some programs
on digital channels
offer digital captioning
information,
which gives you more options for the way the captioning
is
displayed
on the screen.
Closed captioning
is not available on all channels
at all times--only
for specific
programs
encoded
with closed-captioning
information.
When a program is
closed captioned,
(;(; is displayed
in the channel banner
(see Chapter 3 for more
information
about the channel banner).
The closed caption options
are:
(;losed (;aption 5'_,ttit{q Lets you choose the way both analog and digital
closed captioning
information
appears
on the screen. The (;losed caption
sett#zg does not eff_:ct the 1)V]-HDTV input.
Oil
No captioning
information
displayed.
On alwco's
Captioning
information
shown always, when available.
On u'ben **Tztt_,Displays captioning
information,
when available,
whenever
the TV's sound is muted by pressing the MUTE button. The
captioning
information
is not displayed
when the sound is not muted.
Analog (/U Type
Lets you choose your preferred
type of analog closed
captions.
(;(;l and T_,a't l are the primary caption and text services. The captioning
or text is displayed
in the same language
as the program's dialog.
(;(;3 and T_'a't3 serve as the preferred
data channels. The captioning
or text is often a secondary
language
translation,
simplified English, or
displayed
at a slower rate.
(;(;2 and
(;(;4 an(] T_,xt 2 and
T_,xt 4 are rarely
available
and
broadcasters
use them
only in special
conditions,
such as when
CC[ and (;(;3 are not
available,
or Text1 and Text3
are
not
available.
Notes:
The CC options display information
at any position
on the
screen. These options overlay the text on top of the picture
as it is
received.
The Text options display information
at one particular
position
(such as the bottom
third) of the screen. You cannot see the picture
underneath
the text.
