Why HD Video Conferencing for SMBs and Why Now
Not shown are an optional sub-camera for close-ups which allow high granular visuals
of things like blue-prints, etc. And, it should be noted that the back of the main unit is equipped for easy-to-install integration of
PCs so screens of PC-based videos and other files can be shown with high contrast.
Panasonic has also made it convenient on two fronts. For sites with low bandwidth connectivity the HDVC unit adjusts to
network status. Video and audio are supported at 256Kbps/site minimum and audio -only at 192 kbps/site is possible. As
importantly, Panasonic offers "NAT Traversal Service" — a cloud service that uses dedicated Panasonic servers which enables
users to enjoy HD video without having to use ordinary leased lines and without the complicated router settings that leased l ines
require. It also eliminates network address traversal (NAT) associated technical issue s that have nagged video conferencing for
years.
In fact, using the NAT Traversal Service is an attractive alternative for SMBs to get started since it means less pressure on IT
staff.
Why High Definition Visual Communications and why now?
Intuitively we all understand the business (and personal) value of interactive video conferencing. And, as sales of HD TVs
validate, we also understand the business and personal value of high-resolution video and audio for interactive functions along
with their entertainment value.
The bottom line is that High Definition Visual Communications technology is now ready for prime time. Panasonic, which can
provide a complete solution of their own products or be easily integrated with products of others, ha s a tag line that is highly
appropriate, "So Real, So Simple."
Reality is that there is a present and growing business imperative for organizations of all sizes to have HD video conferenci ng in
place using systems that can take full advantage of unified communications and collaboration tools as well as be extensible to
anyone with a video-capable device. This is particularly true as the 'bring your own device' (BYOD) trend accelerates and the
socialization and democratization of IT becomes inevitable and pervasive.
What has not been mentioned here yet is price. However, it is price that makes the value -proposition for any organization to
provide HDVC to the places and people it decides need it to optimize their business processes and in turn their pr ofitability. A
typical HDVC system from Panasonic, which includes the main unit, camera, remote microphone, camera controller and 50" HD
1080p TV, ranges from $5K-10K. Running the numbers for the rate of return and total cost of ownership are easy even if just
factoring in yearly travel costs that are eliminated, and including a factor for the expedition of decision -making engendered by
virtual on-demand availability of required but geographically dispersed individuals.
At the end of the day, just as most of us have migrated to at least one big-screen HDTV in our homes,
