In general, when selecting files for backup, especially for jobs designed for disaster protection, begin by
selecting containers at the top of the Data Protector Express management domain hierarchy. Then
deselect containers or files lower in the hierarchy that you do not need to back up.
For example, you could begin by selecting the network icon at the top of the hierarchy. This will
automatically select all of the machines on the network and all of the volumes on those machines. If there
are machines, volumes or folders you do not want backed up, clear their check boxes. When new
machines or volumes are added to the network (that is to the current Data Protector Express management
domain), Data Protector Express will automatically select these machines and volumes.
There is an additional reason to select containers such as folders or volumes rather than the objects in the
containers: to ensure that you do not miss any files stored loose in the container.
For example, suppose you want to back up a folder named Annual Reports and the folder named
Current Records that is in it, but not the folder named Archive Records. If you check only the Current
Records folder, your job will not back up any files in the Annual Reports folder that are not in the
Current Records folder. Instead, check the Annual Reports folder and then clear the check box for the
Archive Records folder. This selects all files in both the Annual Reports and Current Records
folders—but not the files in the Archive Records folder.
