Overview
This recovery process of a Data Protector Express Virtual Loader is needed for situations, where
the storage groups are still available (on a network share), while the Data Protector Express
installation is not recoverable any more.
Data Protector Express Virtual Loaders are a set of control files, which are stored in the
installation path of Data Protector Express and storage groups, which can be stored anywhere in
the network. These storage groups are sufficient to recovery a Data Protector Express Virtual
Loader and through this to recover the system(s), which used that storage groups for backup.
There is a certain analogy to physical tape libraries, where the control files would represent the
control files, while the storage groups would represent the tape media. The first step would be to
insert the media into the library, which makes them visible, but not yet usable (foreign). Once the
media is imported into the catalog, they are fully usable (local).
Definitions
Extent – A file storing a portion of data written to a VTC, stored in a Storage Folder.
