Installing a Pentium III Xeon Processor
and Processor Power Module
The ProLiant 8500 ships with one to eight Pentium III Xeon processors
installed, and it is capable of supporting up to eight processors and eight
processor power modules. Each processor requires an associated processor
power module. A ninth processor power module is always present to provide
processor bus termination power.
Processors with different speeds may be mixed in the ProLiant 8500 server,
but all processors must run at speed of the slowest processor.
Processors with different cache sizes may be mixed in groups of two. For
information on mixing cache sizes refer to the Compaq website,
www.compaq.com.
NOTE: Be sure to keep processor terminator cards as processors are added. The
processor terminator cards can be used in the event a processor fails so that the server
will run with the remaining processors. Processor terminator cards must be installed in all
processor sockets not occupied by processors.

CAUTION: Handle the Pentium III Xeon processor only by the ejectors and, only
if necessary, lay the processor on its back (the plastic side with the hologram) to
prevent damage to the heat pipes and fins.
