BACKUP

Backups of the media server's hard drive should be performed on a regular basis to preserve and
protect the files. An external hard drive is used (160GB or higher, 250GB or higher for SMS3-250;
FireWire IEEE 1394 strongly recommended, or USB 2.0/1.1 interface). The external hard drive must
be dedicated to the SMS3, as backups reformat the drive. The drive should be left connected to the
SMS3 to be available for incremental backups as music and media are added. Do not connect the
formatted backup drive to a computer.
Select Backup or Auto-Backup
The SMS3 supports a standard Backup, Fast Backup or Auto-Backup. A standard backup option
takes the most time to complete, but preserves audio stream quality while in process. A fast backup
option may be selected to speed up the backup process, but audio stream quality may be affected
(drop-out or skip). Fast backup may cause audio dropouts and cause the user interface to feel slug-
gish. An automatic backup option performs a standard backup every day at 4 a.m. when the external
hard drive is connected to the SMS3. This option is either enabled or disabled.
The first time a complete backup is performed on the media server, it may take a few hours or a few
days, depending on how many files are loaded into the media server's hard drive, and how much the
media server is being used during the backup. Once the initial backup is performed, subsequent
backups should take much less time. These are incremental backups and only copy those files that
are new or have changed since the last backup.
Once the external hard drive is connected to the SMS3, select Backup/Restore from the Options &
Status page. Choose Backup or Auto-Backup. From the System Backup page, select either Backup
or Fast Backup. The media server will display "Backup/Restore in progress" on the screen. The
SMS3 will display "Backup procedure is complete" when finished.
When Auto-Backup is selected, the Automated Backup page appears. Choose Enable to set automat-
ic backups, and Disable to end automatic backups. Check the SMS3 system time settings for
accuracy, as the Auto-Backup commences at 4 a.m. according to the SMS3's time setting.
