A tether is a straight or V-shaped strap t hat
attaches the top part of a ch ild restraint to
special anchorage po ints in the vehicle .
The purpose of the tethe r is t o red uce t he for-
ward movement of the child rest raint in a
crash, in orde r to help reduce the risk of head
injury that cou ld be caused by striking the ve-
hicle interior.
Forward facing child restraints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are requ ired by U.S.
federal regu lations to comply with child head
movement performance requ irements. These
new performance requirements make a tether
necessary on most new child safety seats.
