INSTALLATION
AND CONNECTIONS
If yoursystemrequires direct c onnection o f a video
source to yourdisplay, wesuggest t hatyou consider
programming t heVDIButtons _
so thatyoumay
change the inputusedbyyourdisplay fromtheAVR's
remote. F orinformation o n "learning" remote codes
intoa bultononthe AVRremote, followtheinstruc
tionsshown on page44.

the receiver t o the composite or S videoinputof
yourtelevision monitor or videoprojector:
6. If yourDVDplayer hasY/Pr/Pbanalog component
videooutputs, connect t hemto the Component
Video1 Inputs€_. Although thissetof inputsmay
be assigned t o anyof the fourvideoinputson
theAVR635, the factory default i s forthisinput
to be assigned t o the DVD Audio Inputs _).
Remember to makea digital a udioconnection
between the DVD player andtheAVR, w iththe
CoaxialDigitalInput 1 I_ beingthe factory
default. F orinformation o n changing the input
assignments for either t he component video
jacksor the DVD player's audioconnecllon, see

7. If youhaveotherdevices withY/R/Pbor RGB
component videooutputs, connect t he source
deviceto the Component V ideo2 Inputs_'_).

eitherof theComponent VideoInputs, m akecertain

System and Power Connections
TheAVR635 is designed forflexible usewithmulti-
roomsystems, external control c omponents a nd
power amplifiers.
Main RoomRemoteControlExtension
Ifthe receiver i s placedbehind a solidor smoked
glass cabinet d oor,theobstruction mayprevent t he
remote sensor f rom receiving c ommands. In this
event, a n optional r emote sensor m aybe used.
Connect t he outputofthe remotesensor t o the
RemoteIB Input Jack _.,_._,
If othercomponents a realsoprevented %m receiving
remote commands, onlyonesensor i s needed. S imply
usethisunit'ssensor o r a remoteeyebyrunning a
connection f romthe RemoteIR Output Jack _ to
the Remote IR Input j ackon Harman Kardon or other
compatible e quipment.
Multiroom IR Link
Theremote roomIRreceiver shouldbeconnected t o
theAVR 635 viastandard c oaxial cable. P lug the IRcon-
nection cableinto the MultiroomIRInputJack_. on
theAVR 635'8rearpanel,
If otherHarman Kaldon-compatible
sourceequipment
is partof the mainroominstallation, the RemoteIR
OutputJack_ on he rearpanel s hould be con-
nected to the IRIN jackon source equipment. Thiswill
enable theremote mornlocation to control s ource
equipment functions.
Whena remote IRsensorisusedto control n on
Harman Kardon sourceequipment, werecommend
thatyou makea directconnection o r useanoptional,
external I R"blaster" connected to the RemoteIR
CarrierOutputJack __', Ifyouareindoubtasto
whichIROutput j ackto useforthe equipment inyour
system, c ontact y ourdealeror installer, or the manu-
facl_mr's suppo_l siteandaskwhether t he unitto be
controlled u ses"full c arrier"or "stripped" c arrier IR
commands. When"full c arrier commands" areused,
maketheconnection t o the RemoteIR Carrier
Output Jack_._.Otherwise, makethe connection t o
the RemoteIBOutput Jack _ as noted above.
NOTE: A llremotely controlled c omponents m ustbe
linkedtogether i na "daisychain'.' Connect t he IR OUT
jackof oneunitto the IB INof the nextto establish
thischain.
Multiroom Connections
TheAVR635 isequipped withmultizone c apabililqes
thatallowit to senda separate a udiosource to the
remote zonefromtheoneselected foruseinthe
[nain room.
Depending on yoursystem's requirement, three
optionsareavailable for audioconnection:
Option1: Usehigh-quality, shielded audiointercon-
nectcablefromtheAVR635's location to theremote
room.Inthe remoteroom, c onnect t he interconnect
cableto a stereopoweramplifie_. Theamplifier w ill be
connected t o theroom'sspeakers, Atthe AVR635,
plugthe audiointerconnect cables intothe Multiroom
AudioOutputs_ onthe AVR635's rearpanel.
Option2: Connect t he MultiroomAudio Outputs
€_' onthe AVR635 to theinputsof an opSonal stereo
power amplifier. Runhighquality speaker w irefrom
the amplifier t o the speakers i nthe remote room.
Option3: Taking advantage o f theA\/R635's builtin
sevenchannel amplifie_, it is possible to uselvvoof the
amplifier c hannels to powerspeakers i nthe remote
room. W henusing thisoption, y ouwill not beableto
usethe full7.1 channel capabilities o f theAVR635 in
the mainlistening room,butyouwill beableto add
another l istening mornwithoutexternal powerampli
fiers.Tousethe internal amplifiers t o power a remote
zone, c onnect t he speakers f orthe remote roomloca-
tionto the SurroundBack/MultiroomSpeaker
Outputsi_). Beforeusingthe remote room, y ou
will needto configure theamplifiers f or surround oper
ationbychanging a settingin the I1UL T T I_0 0 11
menu, f ollowing the instructions s hown on page41.
NOTE: F orall options, y oumayconnect a noptional
IRsensor i nthe remote roomto theAVR635 viaan
appropriate c able.Connect t hesensor's cableto the
Multiroom IRInput _ ontheAVR635 andusethe
ZoneIIremote to control t heroomvolume, Alter
natively, youmayinstall a n opllonal v olume control
between the outputofthe amplifiers a ndthespeakers.
A-BUS ®InstallationConnections
TheAVR635 isamongthefewreceivers a vaihble
thatofferbuiltinA-BUSReady operation. Whenused
withan opSonal A-BUSproduct, y ouhaveall theben
dits of remote zoneoperation without t he need for an
external p ower amplifie_.
TousetheAVR635 withanapproved A-BUSprod
uct,simply connect i t to theAVR635 usingstandard
Category 5 wiring thatis properly ratedforthe specific
in-wall i nstallation. Terminate t hewiringat thereceiver
endto a standard RJ 45 connector i ncompliance
withthe instructions furnished withtheA-BUSproduct
Nofurtherinstallation or adjustment is needed, a sthe
A-BUSjackontheAVR635 routes the signals to their
proper d estination f or poweT, signal s ource andconl_ol.
Theoutput f ed to theA BUSjackis determined b ythe
AVR635's multimom system andmenus.
RS-232Connections
TheAVR635 is equipped w ithan RS-232Serial
ConnectionPort-_ thatmaybe usedfortwo par
poses. Whenthe portis connected t o a compatible,
optional, e xternal computer, keypad or control s ystem,
theAVR635 is capable of bi directional communica-
tionsthatenable theexternal s ystem to control t he
AVR, a ndforthe AVRto reportstatus andhandshake
databackto the contmlle_. Useof the RS232 po_l f or
thistype of control r equires s pecific technical knowl
edge,andwe recommend t hatanyconnection a nd
