Prerequisite
Before you start, read Generic Safety and Compliance Notices, and print the following instructions.
The heat-sink-and-fan assembly and microprocessor might be very hot. Before you open the computer
cover, turn off the computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.
For access, do the following:
1. Remove these parts in order, if any:
a. "Computer cover" on page 48.
b. "Front bezel" on page 49.
c. "Optical drive" on page 50.
d. "Hard disk drive" on page 51.
e. "Memory module" on page 56.

"M.2 solid-state drive" on page 57.
g. "Coin-cell battery" on page 58.
h. "Card reader and card reader bracket" on page 59

"Wi-Fi card" on page 60
j.
"PCI-Express card" on page 63.
k. "Power supply assembly" on page 64.
l.
"Heat-sink-and-fan assembly" on page 61.
m. "Microprocessor" on page 70
2. Record the cable routing and cable connections, and then disconnect all cables from the system board.
See "System board" on page 47.
Notes:
• Each computer has a unique Vital Product Data (VPD) code stored in the nonvolatile memory on the
system board. After you replace the system board, the VPD must be updated.
• Your microprocessor sockets and socket covers might look slightly different from the illustrations in this
topic.
• Do not touch the pins on the microprocessor socket or the gold contacts on the microprocessor.
