This document explains the connection and operation of GM87448, 10-amp battery charger. The battery charger is designed
to both recharge your battery and extend your battery's life in applications where it is stored for long periods of time.
The battery charger is a fully-automatic, high efficiency battery charger that charges batteries rapidly and safely. The battery
charger is also secured against short circuit, overload, and high temperatures in an industrial environment. The battery charger
is designed for operation with an engine cranking battery, without requiring external protection kits.
The battery charger is universal voltage input capable, comes with a standard 120 volt/60 Hz AC plug, and charges 12 VDC or
24 VDC battery system applications. Some dual battery bank systems require two battery chargers. See the Electrical
Connections section for details.
Once a valid battery is detected, battery charger will automatically sequence through the charge states as programmed. The
battery charger will begin charging the battery by entering the Bulk Charge State.
With the optional battery temperature sensor connected to the two-pin temperature sensor port, the charger will provide a fault
when battery is outside of recommended operating ranges for optimal generator starting performance. When the temperature
compensation enable parameter is active, the charger will adjust the output voltage based on measured battery temperature at
the battery terminal.
The charger defaults to parameters suitable for flooded lead acid (FLA) battery topology. If another battery type is connected
to the battery charger, the topology must be adjusted on the controller via the user interface or SiteTech™. Changing the
topology will provide recommended default operating parameters, which can be further adjusted to manufacturer
recommended optimal charging profile.
Important: Incorrect charger output system voltage may cause irreversible damage to the battery and abnormal out gassing.
Ensure that the battery charger parameters match the battery manufacturer's specifications before using. In the
controller user interface or SiteTech™ settings, verify that the battery topology and system voltage is set correctly
for the battery type that is used. Refer to the section on SiteTech™ settings for directions on changing parameter
settings.
WARNING
Battery gases. Explosion can cause severe injury or death. Incorrect use of the equalize charge state may lead to
hazardous situations. Equalization is ONLY applicable for flooded lead acid (FLA) type batteries and will damage gel,
absorbed glass mat (AGM), or nickel‐cadmium (NiCad) type batteries. In the controller menu or SiteTech™ settings, verify that
the battery topology is set correctly for the battery type used. Do not smoke or permit flames, sparks, or other sources of
ignition to occur near a battery at any time.
Save these Instructions. This manual contains important safety and operating instructions for the chargers. Read the
entire manual before using. Also read all instructions and cautions for and on the charger, batteries, and equipment in
the vicinity of the batteries.
