IM Chat service system scalability and expansion

The IM Chat service supports a maximum of 1000 simultaneous chat room
sessions on each Media Application Server. The Media Application Server
platform can be an IBM xSeries x3550 server IBM xSeries x336 server, an
IBM xSeries x335 server, or a single-slot IBM HS20 blade server in an IBM
eServer BladeCenter or BladeCenter T chassis. Only one Media Application
Server (running IM Chat) is allowed in each SIP root domain. This server
cannot be shared with other domains. Each user who is participating in a
chat room utilizes one session on the Media Application Server. You can
configure the maximum number of chat rooms, and the maximum number of
users in each room by using the MAS Management Console. The number of
rooms multiplied by the number of users must be less than or equal to 1000.
This capacity estimate is based on test results and may vary slightly based
on the frequency and size of IMs that are sent, the signaling capacity of the
Session Manager, and the overall network throughput.
