off-line (i.e., out of commurucanon with and therefore not con-

mmands sent from this panel, check if the ON LINE light is on. If
it is, press the ON LINE switch once. The ON LINE light should go
out and you should be able to control the printer from the control
panel.
• The FF (Form Feed) switch advances the paper to the top of the
n xt page when using continuous paper. When printing indi-
vidual sheets, use this switch to expel the current sheet from the
printer.
• The LF (Line Feed) switch advances the paper one line at a time.
The ntrol _ panel
can
also be used to turn on several printing
functions
using
a feature called SelecType, which is described in
Chapter 2.
The GX-80 also has several indicator lights that keep you informed
about the printer's operation.
• The POWER light glows green when the power is on.
• The READY light glows green when the printer is ready to
accept data. This light also flickers somewhat during printing.
• The PAPER OUT light glows red to indicate that the printer is
out of paper or that the paper is loaded incorrectly.
• The ON LINE light glows green when the printer can receive
da!a. (If this light does not glow when the power to the printer is
switched on, recheck that the computer and disk drive are on.)

Using the Printer
If you have a word processing or other commerical software prog-
ram, all that is required to print with the GX-80 is to load the
program into your computer, and follow the instructions for printing
given in the software documentation.
In many cases, applications programs already have a built-in option
to use Epson printers. This printer interface cartridge provides the
GX-80 compatibility with Epson FX, RX, or MX series printers.
When you use applications programs, alter the printer selection
using a command ( which might ba called SETUP or INST ALL) to
choose one of those printer options.
When you choose the printer option in the applications program,
make sure that the settings for the printer interface are as shown
below:
• Baud rate : 9600
• Data bit
:
8
• Stop bit
: 1
• Parity
: None
If you intend to use the GX-80 to list programs, use the listing
command for your programming language. The listing command for
the ProDOS BASIC that comes with your Apple lie takes the
following form to direct output to the printer:
PFrn,1
When the printer has finished listing the program, use the following
command to restore normal operation:
F'F,:#12.)
More details about using the GX-80 with ProDOS BASIC are given
in Chapter 4 to 8.
This completes the description of the set-up procedures for the
GX-80. You are now ready to print using your software. The rest of
this manual describes some special features of the GX-80 that you
may find useful.
Note:
If you need to print on the last 2 inches of individual sheets of paper,
refer to Appendix D.
