PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
transmission
oil before the engine is first started
and daily thereafter. Refer to "Checking Oil Level"
which follows.
One of the main reasons for selecting hydraulic
systems for use in today's turf equipment is the
ease of maintenance. By caring for the system us-
ing a regular maintenance
program, you can
eliminate common problems.
This section will explain how to keep the system
maintained and at an optimum performance level.
However, these goals can only be reached when the
mechanic
understands
and follows
a good
maintenance routine which consists of the follow-
ing:
CHECKING OIL LEVEL
"VICKERS TRANSMISSION"
1. Position the machine on a level surface and stop
the engine.
2. The level plug is located on the front side of the
differential
housing, just behind the large cutter
deck counterbalance spring. Be sure the machine is
on a level surface, and remove the level plug. The oil
should be up to the bottom of the hole.
3. If the oil level is low, tilt the seat forward and
remove the filler cap shown in Figure 4. Add a high
quality SE-SF 10W40 oil until the level is up to the
bottom of the check plug hole in the differential
housinQ.
.
Cleanliness is the prime concern when servicing
hydraulic systems.
.
Never allow contaminents into the system.
.
Keep all of the parts clean,
.
Change the oil and filter regularly.
.
Keep your work area clean.
IMPORTANT:
When adding oil to the system, pour it
through a funnel with a fine wire screen (200
mesh
or better). Keep
the funnel and containers imma.
culately clean. This procedure prevents accidental
contamination of the hydraulic system.
.
Follow manufacturer's recommendations as to
oils, filters, and adjustments.
.
Maintain good records.
.
Use common sense.

Use SAE 10W40 at all times.
NOTE: Do not mix engine oil and automatic
transmission
fluid; hydraulic system component
damage may result.
1. Position the machine on a level surface and stop
the engine.
2. Unscrew the dipstick cap (Fig. 5) from the filler
neck and wipe it with a clean rag. Screw the dipstick
cap finger-tight onto the filler neck. Unscrew the
dipstick and check the level of the oil. If the level is
not within 1/2 inch (13mm) from the groove in the
dipstick (Fig. 5), add enough oil to raise the level to
the groove mark. DO NOT OVERFILL by more than
1/2 inch (13mm) above groove.
The axle housing acts as the reservoir for the
system. The transmission
and axle housing are
shipped from the factory with approximately
5
quarts (4.7L) of oil. However, check the level of
