Collecting and working with gps data

You should see the following dialog box:
With your GPS unit turned on and properly connected to your computer, choose
the "Download from GPS" tab at the top.
"Garmin serial" should be selected under GPS device.
You will need to select the proper port in order for the computer to recognize
where the device is located. "COM1:" is usually the best choice when your input
port is the serial connector. If you have used a USB adapter you may need to
choose either "usb:" or "COM2:" or even, as shown above, "COM4". This may
take some experimentation and may require use of the "Refresh" button, if the
device was not turned on when QGIS was started.
The Feature type is "Waypoints".
Under Layer name, type in a name for the points layer you are about to create,
such as "PHFI test points".
Under Output file, click on the "Save As. . ." button and choose a save location
and file name. (The default extension for this file will be .gpx.)
Step 4: Examine the data points you collected with the GPS.
You should see something like this:
