Figure 50. Air Cleaner Maintenance
1. Remove the wing nut, air cleaner cover, and foam filter
element, and set them aside.
2. To remove dirt, tap the paper filter element several
times on a hard surface, or blow compressed air not
exceeding 30 psig (207 kPa, 2.1 kgf/cm²) through the
filter element from the inside out. NEVER brush off
dirt. Brushing will force dirt into the fibers. Replace the
paper filter element if it is excessively dirty.
3. Clean the foam filter element in warm, soapy water or
a nonflammable solvent. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Dip
the element in clean engine oil, and completely wring
out all excess oil from the element.
DANGER
To prevent a possible fire or explosion, NEVER use
gasoline as a cleaning solvent.
4. Reinstall the foam and paper elements and air cleaner
cover, and secure with the wing nut.
