Troubleshooting Chart
Cause
Teeth are dull.
Auger is turning too fast and bouncing.
Auger is encountering rocks, roots, or other
obstructions.
Driveline torque limiter is not engaging.
Driveline assembly "Bottoms Out" and does not
allow auger to lower any further.
Soil could have hardpan layer below surface.
No sway bars or sway blocks on the tractor.
Lift arms not adjusted evenly.
Post Hole Digger is mounted with excessive
looseness in the hitch connecting pins.
Tractor
moved on its own while auger was in the
hole.
Operator moved the tractor excessively with auger
in hole to try to straighten hole being dug at an
angle.
Auger is encountering rock, roots, or other
obstructions.
Shearbolt has been replaced with a harder bolt.
Driveline torque limiter is seized up.
Operator did not lower 3-point hitch to the ground
slowly.
Faulty tractor hydraulics for the 3-point hitch.
Tractor is too small to handle the Post Hole Digger. Mount Post Hole Digger on a larger tractor.
Shearbolt is broken and retainer screw is missing
in driveline yoke at the gearbox input shaft.
auger
Raising
too high with power take-off
engaged causing excessive joint operating angle.
Auger swings while moving from hole to hole with
power take-off engaged causing excessive power
take-off joint operating angle.
Having to raise the auger with an extension too
high in order to remove it from the hole causing
excessive joint operating angle.
Shearbolt has been replaced with a harder bolt.
Driveline has not been properly lubricated.
power take-off was engaged while the tractor
engine was running at high rpm.
Driveline contacts ground before hole is
completely dug.
Operating power take-off at high rpm.
Driveline torque limiter is seized up.
No oil in Gearbox.
Oil not changed per instructions.
Shearbolt has been replaced with a harder bolt.
Driveline torque limiter is seized up.
Solution
Sharpen or replace teeth.
Reduce power take-off speed. Never exceed 300
rpm.
Lift auger from hole and remove obstruction or
change location.
Have torque limiter serviced.
Remove auger from digger and lower digger for
inspection. Gearbox should lower to the ground; if
not, Driveline assembly may need to be
shortened. Maintain 1/2 overlap of driveline tubes.
Use optional Down Pressure Kit to assist pushing
auger into the ground.
Add stabilizers to lower 3-point lift arms.
Adjust lift arms to be level with each other.
Use proper size pins or bushings.
Always make sure gear selector is in neutral or
park and brakes are set.
Be careful not to damage gearbox or auger when
moving the tractor. While digging, move the tractor
in small increments to keep the hole straight.
Lift auger from hole and remove obstruction or
change location.
PD10: Use M8 grade 8.8 metric shear-bolt.
PD15, 25 & 35: Use 3/8" grade 5 shear-bolt.
Have torque limiter serviced.
Lower 3-point hitch slowly to ground.
Repair hydraulic for the 3-point hitch.
Replace shearbolt and retainer screw with jamb
nut at the driveline yoke.
Stop driveline rotation before raising auger too
high.
Stop driveline rotation before moving the tractor.
Stop driveline rotation while auger is still in the
hole and before the Post Hole Digger is too high to
cause drive line damage.
PD10: Use M8 grade 8.8 metric shear-bolt.
PD15, 25 & 35: Use 3/8" grade 5 shear-bolt.
Lubricate driveline per instructions.
Slow engine down to an idle before engaging
power take-off.
Pin boom to yoke per "Depth Adjustment"
instructions. May Need to use an extension.
Never Run power take-off above 300 rpm.
Have torque limiter serviced.
Check oil level in gearbox per instructions.
Change oil per instructions.
PD10: Use M8 grade 8.8 metric shear-bolt.
PD15, 25 & 35: Use 3/8" grade 5 shear-bolt.
Have torque limiter serviced.
