Various possible causes.
System is set to autoboot.

Action
Listen carefully for computer beep codes;
record the number of beeps and their patterns
and then check the beep codes below:
1 short and 4 long beeps – no usable memory
detected.
2 long and 4 or 5 short beeps – Firmware in
flash ROM is corrupted.
For Compaq Tru64 UNIX users: When the SRM
console starts, press [Ctrl/C] to stop the
autostart countdown. Type
>>>auto_action halt
to change a variable.
For Windows NT users: When AlphaBIOS starts,
Ç
press a
to stop the autostart countdown.
Then press [F2] to enter setup. Use the down
arrow key to select CMOS set up. Press [Enter]
then [Tab] to "Autostart count" and select the
number of seconds that you need.
