306 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE
3. Assoon asyou turn yourkey to the ON position,you
willsee your MIL symbolcome on as partof a normal
bulb check.
4. Appr oximately 15 secondslater ,one oftwo thingswill
happen:
a. The MIL light will blink for appr oximately 5 sec-
ondsand then r emain on untilthe firstengine crank or
the key is turned of f.This means that your vehicle's
OBD system is notreadyand you should notpr oceed
to the I/M station.
b. The MIL lightwillr emain fully illuminated untilthe
firstengine crank or the key is turned of f.This means
thatyour vehicle's OBD system is
pr oceed to the I/M station.
If your OBD system is not readyyou should see your
dealer or r epair facility. If your vehicle was r ecently
serviced orhad a battery failur e orr eplacement,you may
need to do nothing mor e than drive your vehicle as you
normally would in or derforyourOBD system to update.
A r echeck with the above testr outine may then indicate
thatthe system is now r eady.
Regar dless of whether your vehicle's OBD system is
r eady or not r eady, if the MIL symbol is illuminated
during normalvehicle operation,you should have your
vehicle serviced befor e going to the I/M station.The I/
station can failyourvehicle because the MIL symbolison
with the engine r unning.
