Accident
prevention is the
job
of
every motorist. Do
your part
in
keeping
the accident rate
down by keeping
a
close
check on
the fol-
lowing
S&fety
factors:
YOUR CAR-Pontiac engineers, the
factory, and your
dealer
have done everything
possible
to design, build, and deliver to
you
a
safe,
mechanically
sound
1957
Pontiac.
However, it is
your
responsibility to keep it
in
a safe operating condition. Your
Pontiac dealer
will
be glad to cooperate
with you in
performing
regular
safety
checks each
spring
and
fall
as one means of
insuring
your car's
safe
mechanical
operation.
THE ROAD-Road conditions have
an
important bearing
on
safe driving. Holes, ruts,
soft shoulders,
bumps, loose
gravel,
etc.,
can cause accidents. Learn how your Pontiac handles under
all
types of road conditions
and
drive
so
that you have complete
control at all times. Remember, road
conditions vary with weather
conditions. Use extra caution when roads are
slippery or
visibility
is poor. Treat speed limits as maximum
speeds
under ideal
con-
ditions .
.
. not as a reqllired
speed
for
all
conditions.
TRAFFIC-Not only should
you
keep
your
car under
absolute
control at all times, but
you
must keep an eye
on
the "other
fellow." He may be another driver, a
pedestrian,
or
even a bicycle
rider. Try to anticipate the worst thing he might do. The
good
driver drives as though everyone else
on
the road is
careless.
Always leave a margin of
safety when
passing,
with
more than
enough distance
'
'between
your
car
and
the
car ahead. A
void
weaving in traffic. Never cross the
yellow
line.
Observance
of
these and other rules marks the good driver from the poor.
YOU-Accidents do not
"happen" ... they are caused.
In
most
cases they are caused by human error. Your car is a mechanically
powered motor
vehicle
and as
such
responds
only
to
your
com-
mand. It cannot tell good roads from poor, heavy traffic
from
light,
read
traffic
signs, or
look out for other cars. Up to its own
limitation it will go as fast
as you
wish to drive it. It is up to
you
as
the driver to
supply
the
intelligence
that the motor
vehicle
lacks.
Learn and
obey
local traffic laws. They
are written for
your protection. Remember, the basis for most traffic rules
is
simple courtesy and common
sense.
Only you can protect
your-
self, your
family, and your fellow
driver.
