MAINTENANCE

5.21 HYDRAULIC BRAKES ______________________________________________________

!
WARNING
Improper maintenance of the brake system may result
in loss of vehicle control by the operator. Losing
control of the vehicle due to brake loss may cause
injury to the operator or bystanders and vehicle
damage.
This vehicle is equipped with four-wheel hydraulic brakes
controlled by the brake pedal and a hand operated
parking brake lever.
Keep your brake system clean and properly maintained.
Do not operate the truck if the brakes do not stop vehicle
properly.
The brake fluid master cylinder reservoir is located under
the front cowl.
The fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir must be
kept between the MIN (minimum) and MAX (maximum)
marks. Add DOT 3 type brake fluid as necessary.
If the brake fluid indicator light comes on and remains on
check the fluid level in the reservoir.
Bleeding Hydraulic Brakes:
If the brakes do not hold properly, if they feel spongy, or if
the brake fluid reservoir is allowed to run dry it may be
required to bleed the system in order to remove air from
the brake lines.
1. Bleed the brakes in the following order: Left Rear,
Right Rear, Right Front and Left Front.
2. Attach a hose to the bleeder screw and place the
other end of the hose in a container to catch fluid
from brake when bleeding the system.
3. Bleed brake.
a.
Have an assistant push down on the brake pedal
and hold the pedal down.
Loosen the bleeder screw allowing fluid to flow.
b.
c.
Tighten the bleeder screw.
d.
Have assistant release pedal.
NOTE: Do Not release brake pedal until the bleeder
screw is tightened or air will be sucked back into the
brake lines.
e.
Repeat Steps a through d as required until all air
bubbles are purged from the system and a steady
flow of fluid comes from the brake line.
f.
Periodically check fluid level in reservoir. Do not
allow the reservoir to fully empty or bleeding
procedure will need to be repeated.
en-28
4. Repeat Step 3 for each brake.
5. Most communities have a disposal system for DOT
3 brake fluid. Please dispose of fluids properly.
