Shooting using a shadow-clearing flash
• When using a shadow-clearing flash that
accepts a synchronization cord, or a shadow-
clearing flash that reacts to the light from the
main flash and supports the preflash function
The shooting conditions are the same as those when only
the built-in flash is used.
Using a shadow-clearing flash results in a more natural
picture. Place a background sheet about 1 meter behind
from the subject, and place the shadow-clearing flash
immediately behind the subject. The shadow-clearing
flash not only clears the shadows but also gives an
appropriate amount of light to the background sheet to
improve the S/N ratio in the background of the picture
taken. Carefully adjust the settings so that the light
reaches as wide an area as possible.
When the shadow-clearing flash is too strong, the
shadow-clearing light is deflected around the subject
and degrades the picture quality. In that case, it is
recommended to decrease the quantity of light by, for
instance, covering the flash with a piece of white gauze
or thin white cloth.

AE AREA
FACE or Background
EV Compensation When AE AREA is set to FACE:
Usually, appropriate brightness is
obtained. However, as the
automatic exposure control
functions so that a pale skin tone
becomes darker and that a darker
skin tone becomes brighter, adjust
EV compensation as required.
When AE AREA is set to
Background:
EV Compensation is necessary
according to the background color
and the power of light of the
shadow-clearing flash. Perform a
test-shooting and adjust EV
Compensation before actual
shooting. EV Compensation
according to skin tone is not
required. Always keep the
distance between the background
and the subject constant.

• When using a shadow-clearing flash that
reacts to the light from the main flash but
does not support the preflash function
The PROGRAM AUTO exposure mode cannot be used,
because the shadow-clearing flash is triggered by the
preflash of the built-in flash. In this case, set Exposure
Mode to MANUAL EXPOSURE.
In this mode, the automatic exposure control is not
available, and the power of the built-in flash is adjusted
so that EV Compensation becomes ±0.00 EV when the
distance between the subject and the lens is 1.5 meters.
Therefore, if the distance between the subject and the
lens is other than 1.5 meters, EV Compensation must be
adjusted accordingly. If the distance is less than 1.5
meters, adjust EV Compensation toward the minus
direction, and if the distance is greater, adjust EV
Compensation toward the plus direction. For example, if
the distance is 1.0 meter, EV Compensation should be
around –1.00 EV, and if the distance is 2.0 meters, EV
Compensation should be around +0.75 EV or +1.00 EV.
Be sure to adjust the power of the flash for optimal
shooting by adjusting EV Compensation beforehand.
