The 3Com 3101 Basic Phone and 3101 Basic Speaker Phone is based on the same
design of the recently released 3102 Business Phone. It is the culmination of
customer focus groups, research and design reviews, and most importantly, over
½ million customer experiences with IP phones. The new console is more compact,
more symmetrical and easier to use. Colors have been toned down to create a
sleeker, more contemporary look.
New Wideband Audio Platform (Handset only)
The handsets on the 3101 Basic Phone and 3101 Basic Speaker Phone are
designed to support emerging wideband audio standards. Over the coming months
we plan to add software support to enable this capability on the handsets (The
speaker phone on the 3101SP will always remain narrow band.) Wideband is a
common reference to the ability to reproduce speech at 7 kHz or greater. The
existing PSTN can only reproduce speech to about 3.3 kHz, a legacy of the
Alexander Graham Bell, it simply isn't able to reproduce high frequency. The PSTN
cannot support the bandwidth required for wideband but an IP network can!
