grease
retainer

replace
it if
there
is
any
doubt
of
its condition.
Adjust
the
w heel
bearings
as
outlined
in
Section

Before disassembling
the differential, it
is
advisable
to
determine
through
inspection
the cause
of
difficulty
or fa ilure
of the p arts. Drain
libricant
from the
d ifferential
housing and then
remove
the
differential
cover.
Wash
the
differential
parts
thoroughly with solvent so the parts can
b
e
care-
fully
inspected.
Should it
be determined by
this
inspection
that
t
h
e
d ifferentia
l
requires
overhauling,
the
axle
must be
removed
from
t
h
e
vehicle.

Remove the axle shafts.

Remove the
housing
cover and
four
screws
holding
the
two
differential side
bearing caps
in
posifion.
M
ake
sure there are matching
letters or
other
m
arks on the caps
and the housing so
that
each
cap
can
be reinstalled
in
the same position
and
location from
which it is removed.

t is necessary to spread the
carrier
as
the
differential
bearing
has initial
preload.
Use
H
ousing
Spreader
T
ool
W
-129,
as shown in Fig.
239, to
spread
the housing.
Clamp
on
a
d ial
indicator.
From
the
side,
measure the carrier
spread.
When the
spreading force
is
applied,
do
not
exceed
a limit
of
.020"
[0,50 mm.l.
R
emove the dial
indicator.
Care-
fully
pry
the
differential case loose, using pry bars
at t
h
e heads
of
the
ring
gear bolts and carrier
casting.

Should the
spreader
tool be
unavailable,
use
two pry
bars, one on
each side
of
the differential
case
opening,
to
pry
out
the
differential as
snown
in
Fig. 240.

down the lock strap tabs and rerrove the
screws
and
lock
straps h olding
the
differential
ring
gear
to the
differential
case.

differential
shaft
is held in place by
a
lock
pin.
Use
a
small punch
as
shown
in
Fig

drive
out the
lock pin.
Remove
the differential
shaft.
