Welcome
The Explorer® 940 Set-Top receives and displays digital signals, and it
delivers programs in exceptional picture and audio quality.
Through the 940 you can also access interactive services, such as
video-on-demand and pay-per-view programs. Contact your cable service
provider for information about these and other available services.
Use the instructions in this guide to install the 940 and to access your
cable services. Then, sit back and enjoy the 940 experience.

Safety First
Before using the Explorer 940 Set-Top, read the IMPORTANT SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS section of this guide.
Identify Your Set-Top
If the set-top requires troubleshooting in the future, your cable service
provider may ask for the serial number.
To fi nd the serial number for your set-top, look on the back panel for a label
that is similar to the example shown here. The serial number begins with "SA"
and is located in the lower left corner of the bar code.
Use the space provided here to record the serial number:

Watch TV
Use the Remote Control to Access Services and Programs
Press the following keys on the remote control to access cable services
and programs:
Guide–Display the on-screen guide of TV programming schedules
and other services available from your cable service provider, such as
video-on-demand and pay-per-view programs.
Arrows–Highlight a program in the schedule.
Info–Display the description of a specifi c program (either from the on-
screen guide or while viewing a program).
Select–Watch a specifi c program in the guide.
Performance Tips
If the 940 does not perform as expected, the following tips may help. If you
need further assistance, contact your cable service provider.
No Picture
Verify that the power to your TV is turned on.
If the 940 is plugged into a wall switch, verify the wall switch is in the
ON position.
Note: You should avoid plugging the 940 into an outlet that is
controlled by a wall switch.
Verify that all cables are properly connected.
If your system includes a VCR or stereo, verify that you have properly
connected the device to the 940.
Verify that your TV displays the input where the set-top is connected.
Verify that the TV is set to the proper input channel.
No Color
Verify that the current TV program is broadcast in color.
Adjust the TV color controls.
No Sound
If your setup includes a stereo, verify that you have properly connected
it to the 940.
Verify that the volume is turned up.
Verify that the mute function is not engaged.

Connect the coaxial cable that delivers the signal from
your cable service provider
Connect a coaxial cable to Cable Out to send audio and
video signals to a TV or VCR. These signals are standard
defi nition (SD) TV video and monaural audio
(optional) Connect an RCA cable to send a digital audio signal
Connect RCA cables to Audio Out to send audio signals
(left and right) to a stereo receiver or TV with stereo inputs
(optional) Connect an S-Video cable to send an S-video signal
to your TV or VCR. This signal is standard defi nition but
higher quality than other standard television connections
Connect an IR extender
Connect the DC power

Installing the Explorer 940 Set-Top

WARNING: Electric shock
hazard! Unplug all electronic
devices before connecting
or disconnecting any device
cables to the receiver.
1. Unplug all electronic devices
before connecting the set-top.
2. Connect the set-top and VCR
to the appropriate audio and video
inputs as shown in the diagram.
3. Connect the set-top to the coaxial cable
coming in from the wall.
4. Plug the set-top's external power supply
and TV into an AC power source.

5. Plug the VCR into an AC power source.
6. Plug the DC cord from the external power supply into the set-top.
7. For the TV to receive the signal, press the appropriate button on the
remote control to select the audio/video inputs to which you have
connected the 940.
8. Wait for at least 5 minutes for the set-top to be updated with the latest
programming and service information. When the green LED stops
fl ashing, the update is complete.
9. Press the POWER key on the remote control.
