Introduction General In addition to regular Inmarsat-B services, Saturn B equipment with software for Extended Services provides as follows: • Inmarsat-B Lease Mode CN17 • Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module Inmarsat-B Lease Mode and Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module are special services provided by some LESOs.
For operation, please note that Saturn B needs to be commissioned for this service. • If Saturn B also is commissioned for Inmarsat normal mode, the IMN Numbers registered for the terminal remain unchanged for use in normal mode. Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module (EBM) requires installation of an Interface Converter Unit (ICU) and an External Modem unit.

Variable Bandwidth System (VBS), and Variable Bit Rate (CN17Ext) VBS is a Telenor/COMSAT LES system implementation, whereas CN17Ext is a Nera/Stratos system implementation. They provide ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship dial-up service. Selection of speed, channel etc. is automatic, based on request and available service (channel/speed).
A Rotary Joint Kit, part 101210 is required for both Saturn Bm Antennas. The Dual Antenna system is only functional for Inmarsat Lease Mode operations. Antenna-A Antenna-B Dual Antenna Switch Control MCU-A MCU-B Figure 4 Dual Antenna system. Saturn B Extended Services...

Within each service both manual and hot-line access modes are supported for channel activation. In addition to the standard Saturn B installation, the Enhanced Bitrate Module (EBM) consists of an Interface Converter Unit (ICU), and an external modem unit (Comtech CDM-550T).
The ICU is either in normal mode (regular Inmarsat-B or Inmarsat CN17), or in EBM mode. In normal mode the Saturn B MCU is directly connected to the antenna RX and TX paths, and the Comtech CDM-550T Modem is disconnected.

EBM mode In EBM mode, the ICU acts as a frequency conversion unit between the Comtech Modem 70 MHz IF signals and the Saturn B ADE L- band signals. The TX converter frequency is 1573 MHz and the RX converter frequency 1471.5 MHz. In this mode regular Inmarsat traffic is not possible.

• When Saturn B acknowledges the command, the ICU switches the Comtech Modem into the RF path. The indicator lights steadily. • At the same time Saturn B turns the antenna high power amplifier ON establishing the satellite circuit. • The pre-programmed Comtech Modem is now connected to a similar modem at the LES end.

• During a manual call from ICU, an event such as rewind forces the Saturn B terminal to clear the channel causes the MCU to issue a ‘NO CARRIER’ result code to the ICU. The ICU then immediately disconnects the Comtech Modem from the antenna and reverts back to normal mode.
The modem will then accept subsequent configuration command strings on its RS232 Remote Control port. This is achieved by connecting an RS232 cable between this port and the Saturn B PC port. The Saturn B reprograms the modem with channel numbers and data rates every time a satellite connection is being established.
