Why is it that my California trimmer will not start up. I clean the gas tank and the carburetor, any suggestions?

Based on the context, the likely reasons your California Trimmer mower won't stay running, even after cleaning the gas tank and carburetor, include:
1. Clogged or Dirty Carburetor: Even if cleaned, internal passages may still be partially blocked, preventing proper fuel flow.
2. Bad or Leaking Gasket: A failing carburetor gasket can cause air leaks, leading to poor fuel-air mixture and stalling when the choke is turned off.
3. Fuel Tank or Fuel Line Leak: If the tank or fuel line leaks or isn't sealed properly, it may prevent consistent fuel flow.
4. Improper Carburetor Installation: If the carburetor is not tightened correctly or aligned with the gasket, it can cause vacuum leaks.
5. Old or Contaminated Fuel: Even after cleaning, using old fuel can cause poor performance. Make sure to use fresh fuel.
Inspect the gasket, check for vacuum leaks, verify fuel flow, and ensure the carburetor is fully cleaned and properly installed.

Based on the context, possible reasons your California Trimmer mower won't start after cleaning the carburetor and gas tank and adding new gas include:
1. Contaminated Fuel: You mentioned seeing small clippings in the tank. Even if it's not "overly" dirty, debris can clog fuel lines or the carburetor.
2. Oil Overfill or Fuel in Oil: Oil started coming out when you opened the dipstick, and you noticed a gas smell in the garage. This suggests fuel may have leaked into the oil, which can prevent the engine from starting.
To fix this, drain and replace the oil, ensure the fuel is clean, and check for any remaining blockages in the fuel system.

California Trimmer Mower Maintenance Manual Mower Maintenance Heavy Duty & Commercial Models Commercial Use – Daily Inspection 1. Check Engine oil level. The oil should be filled to the engine specifications (see engine owner’s manual) 2. Check air cleaner. Some Honda engines have an oil bath filter. Oil should be added to maintain optimum level.
However, the position of the engine on the frame does not offer easy access and can cause the old oil to pour onto the mower, requiring extra clean-up time. It is easier to remove the oil-fill plug. Tip the mower forward and pour oil into a can or plastic container.
4 to 5 holes of the “quadrant” (no. 3). In either height range, moving the “height adjustment lever” (no. 2) towards the front of the mower will raise the height in small increments. Moving the “height adjustment lever” (no. 2) towards the back of the mower will lower the height in small increments.
The “V” of the catcher bale is offset to one side, making one side shorter than the other. On 20 and 25 commercial mowers the short side goes to the left, as shown. On the Home Owner mower the short side goes to the right.
