You should always plan equipment location based on department needs. The following are some common layouts for collocating an external antenna with the Lancer 3W modem: • Roof to trunk. In this layout there is a trunk-mounted modem and antenna attached to the roof with a whip antenna.
Mount the antenna on the center of the trunk. This placement is critical for proper signal reception. • Mount the antenna behind the light bar. Modem Location We recommend placing the Lancer 3W modem in one of the following vehicle locations: • Trunk (preferably off of the floor). •...
• Ensure the routed antenna cable is minimized as much as possible and the distance between the antenna and the Lancer 3W modem is not longer that the cable length. • Select a cable routing free of hazards such as excessive heat, possible screw punctures or a routing that requires you to pinch or kink the cable when installing it.
Lancer 3W Installation Guide 3.5.1 Mounting The Antenna Always mount the antenna according to the manufacturer’s specifications. In a normal design, we suggest that you mount the antenna first. Ensure the antenna is watertight. Use a sealant to keep out any moisture.

Lancer 3W Installation Guide 4 Installing Modem Software Lancer 3W modem software will install two programs: • Wireless Modem Manager to check the status of the Lancer 3W modem. • Wireless Configuration Wizard to configure modem settings. Note: Before installing the Wireless Modem Manager, contact your CDPD service provider and obtain an IP address.

Use the following procedures to run the Wireless Configuration Wizard. 1. Launch the Wireless Configuration Wizard. Lancer 3W Installation Guide 7 Troubleshooting This section lists possible problems that might occur in Lancer 3W operation, along with troubleshooting tips to solve them. The Lancer’s modem LEDs don’t go on. This is usually a power issue. • Check the wiring to the battery and ensure it is properly grounded.

The modem doesn’t register to the CDPD Network (for example, the SVC and RDY LEDS never go solid). The Lancer 3W is either being rejected by the network or the setup is incorrect. • Check the RSSI reading using the Modem Manager. There should be at least -100dBm to attempt a registration.

Lancer 3W Installation Guide The modem registers but can’t send or receive data. • Check the DNS settings in the Wireless Modem Manager. • Confirm the network connection by pinging a known IP address (such as your provider’s DNS server).
• The version of the operating system (e.g. Windows 95 Version B, NT 4, or CE 2.1). • The Electronic Identification (EID) number of the modem (found on the Lancer 3W label, or in the Wireless Modem Manager). • The version of the software for Wireless Modem Manager and Wireless Configuration Wizard software (found in the About screen).
