Starting the engine

Keep the brake pedal pressed
when starting the engine.
It is dangerous to operate the
engine in a closed space. The
engine consumes oxygen and
discharges carbon dioxide, carbon
monoxide and other toxic gases.
WARNING: Before starting-up the
vehicle, deactivate both the electronic
alarm by pressing the radio-controlled
key and the electrical devices with high
5
power absorption (air-conditioning,
heated side window, headlights etc.).
WARNING: Do not start the engine if
the fuel in the tank is low.
Procedure for manual gearbox
version
1) Ensure that the handbrake is
engaged.
2) Move the gearshift to neutral.
3) Press down the clutch without
pressing the accelerator.

Starting the engine

4) Turn the ignition key to the AVV
position and release it as soon as the
engine starts.
If the engine does not start at the first
attempt, move the key back to STOP
before trying again.
Do not leave the ignition key in the
MAR position with the engine off.
Procedures for the
"Cambiocorsa" gearbox
1) Ensure that the handbrake is
engaged and that the doors are closed.
2) Keep the brake pedal pressed when
starting the engine.
3) Do not press the accelerator pedal.
4) Put the gearshift in neutral, by
holding both the UP and DOWN levers
towards the steering wheel, and
ensure that the gear indicator shows N
and that it is not flashing.
5) Turn the ignition key to the AVV
position and release it as soon as the
engine starts. Do not keep the key
turned to the AVV position for a long
time. If the car does not start, turn the
key back to the STOP position and wait
until the gear indicator switches off
before repeating the procedure.
The engine can be started even with a
gear engaged. In fact, with the key in
the AVV position (with the brake pedal
pressed), the system allows the clutch
to open and the transmission to be
shifted to neutral. Then the starter
motor receives clearance to perform
the start-up. This step usually requires
about one second. With very low
temperatures, this step could take a
slightly longer time.
If the gearbox is instead in the N
position, starting is immediate.
When the engine has started up,
release the key and it will
automatically return to the MAR
position.
If the car does not start, turn the key
back to the STOP position and wait
until the gearshift display switches off
and then repeat the entire procedure.
