When you order Caller ID service, the telephone company sends the caller’s name, telephone number, the date, and the time of the call between the first and second rings.

However, each module (and each device, such as a telephone or answering machine) that you connect to the telephone line draws power from the telephone line.

43-956.fm Page 9 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM Note: You must not connect the module to: • Coin-operated systems • Party-line systems • Most electronic key telephone systems In the unlikely event that your module causes problems on the telephone line, the telephone company can disconnect your service.

• Increase the distance between the module and the radio or TV • Use outlets on different electrical circuits for the module and the radio or TV Consult your local telephone company or Radio Shack store if the problem con- tinues.
The module is powered by one 9-volt battery. For the longest operation, we rec- ommend you use an alkaline battery (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-553). Even if you use an optional AC adapter, install a battery to keep the information in the mod- ule’s memory during power failures.

Place the battery in the compartment as shown, following the correct polar- ity (+ and –) as marked inside and outside the compartment.
43-956.fm Page 13 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM SETTING THE LANGUAGE OPTION When you install the battery, the module begins its start-up sequence. The mod- ule displays a test screen for several seconds and the message received indica- tor turns on for about six seconds. Next, it displays its total memory capacity. Then the module displays the following screen: To select Spanish messages, press .
The module connects to the phone line and your phone using two modular tele- phone-line connectors. If your phone line does not have this type of connector, you can get the necessary adapters at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can have the telephone company update your telephone wiring.

43-956.fm Page 16 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM CONNECTING TO A TWO-LINE PHONE To record information about calls received on a two-line phone, you can connect two modules using a triplex adapter (Cat. No. 279-402). Each module only records information about calls received on the line to which it is connected. Follow these steps to connect two modules to a two-line phone.

Unplug the answering machine’s cord from the phone line jack and plug this cord into either of the module’s telephone line connectors. 2. Plug one end of the supplied phone cord into the module’s other telephone line connector, then plug the other end of the cord into the phone line jack.
43-956.fm Page 19 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER You can connect an optional AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1670, available by spe- cial order) to the module to power the module from AC power. Caution: Use only the recommended AC adapter. Even other adapters that have the same ratings as the recommended adapter might not work properly.
43-956.fm Page 20 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST Follow these steps to adjust the display’s contrast for the best visibility. 1. Press and hold down DELETE 2. While holding down DELETE , repeatedly press REVIEW within 6 sec- onds to decrease the contrast or to increase the contrast.

The module also auto- matically displays all received caller ID information for every incoming call, in- cluding the caller’s telephone number and the call’s time and date. In some areas, the caller’s name is also sent.
43-956.fm Page 22 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM UNAVAILABLE If caller ID service is not available in the caller’s area, appears UNAVAILABLE on the display. ANONYMOUS CALLS If the caller has elected to block caller ID information, ANONYMOUS CALL pears on the display.
43-956.fm Page 23 Monday, August 16, 1999 3:20 PM NO DATA SENT When call information is not sent by the telephone company, the module displays NO DATA SENT . This happens if you have not subscribed to Caller ID service or if you answer the call before the sec- ond ring.

These protection circuits meet or exceed the FCC requirements. However, lightning striking the phone or power lines can damage the system.
