The extraordinary handling is also due to two more examples of Maserati's technical expertise: suspensions and steering.
The chassis features front and rear wishbone suspensions with forged aluminium hubs and arms in order to ensure a weight reduction in the unsprung mass.
The suspension layout benefits from Antidive, which prevents the front pitching down when braking and Antisquat, which prevents the rear
pitching down when accelerating. The standard equipment dampers are in steel, with fixed settings that offer the best handling characteristics,
and at the same time high levels of driving comfort.
The alternative Skyhook system*, standard on the GranTurismo S Automatic, developed in collaboration with Mannesmann-Sachs, assures the
automatic and continuous control of the damping, absorbing every irregularity of the road. It guarantees the highest level of ride comfort, without
penalising performance and sports handling.
This system uses acceleration sensors that register the movements of each wheel and the body of the car: by processing this data, the control unit
interprets the driving conditions and the road surface, and instantly adapts the setting of the shock absorbers accordingly, thanks to their proportional
valves.
The Skyhook* system gives the Maserati owner another advantage - it lets you adapt the dynamic behaviour of the car to your own driving style and
to road conditions, by simply choosing between two different settings, Normal and Sport (selected via the SPORT button).
The first mode is characterised by soft damping for greater comfort. Alternatively, by pressing the SPORT key you can switch to a harder setup,
with greatly reduced roll angles and load transfer, enhancing the stability of the car. The Maserati GranTurismo is suitable for everyday use,
but it is also a true sports car.
The new GranTurismo is perfect for everyday use, but it is also a true sports car. This is clearly reflected in the sizes of rims and tyres selected for
the car: a perfect combination of roadholding and comfort. In the standard configuration, the Maserati GranTurismo is fitted with 19" aluminium
rims with larger-sized tyres at the rear, guaranteeing the best possible grip during fierce acceleration. The optional 20" version has a look inspired by
the wheels on the Maserati Birdcage 75
th
concept car.
The tyres (front 245/35 R20, rear 285/35 R20), with rigid sidewalls, large size, and reduced steering slip angle, increase the car's agility and rapidity
of response during demanding cornering.
The Maserati GranTurismo has a Brembo braking system comprising four ventilated discs, with 48 rounded drillings, each one 4 mm wide (disc
diameter and thickness: 330 mm x 32 mm at the front; 330 mm x 28 mm at the rear).
The calipers have four pistons of different diameters with ceramic isolating linings; the 4-channel ABS has electronically controlled braking
distribution (EBD) integrated in the Maserati Stability Program.
The Maserati GranTurismo S and GranTurismo S Automatic are characterised by the large 360 mm front disc brakes. The dual-cast disc consists
of two materials: cast iron for the external braking surface ring and aluminium for the hub. This combines the benefits of cast iron's excellent
performance at high temperatures with the light weight of aluminium.
The Brembo braking system is completed by powerful six-piston single-billet aluminium calipers.
