Thank you for purchasing a Tesco JKR17 Kettle.
For your safety, please read this User Guide
carefully, paying particular attention to the
Safety Guide section.
SAFETY GUIDE
Before using the kettle, please read these safety notes
carefully.
• Young children should not use this kettle.
• Always remove the kettle from the base before using or
filling.
• Do not overfill the kettle by exceeding the MAX level on
the water level window. If the kettle is overfilled, boiling
water may splash out.
• Ensure that the kettle is resting on a flat surface,
cannot fall into water and is not close to the edge of
the work surface.
• Do not immerse the power cord, base or kettle in water
or other liquids.
• Do not let the power cord overhang the edge of the
work surface or allow it to touch hot surfaces or
sources of heat or flame. Excess cable should be
coiled into the base of the kettle and clipped into the
cable notch provided.
• Be careful of hot steam while the kettle is in operation,
when pouring or filling the kettle and just after it has
switched off.
• Do not open the lid while the kettle is boiling, or
immediately afterwards.
• The body of the kettle will become hot during
operation, and will remain hot for some time
afterwards. Do not touch. Only pick the kettle up by the
handle when using it.
• Parents must warn children not to touch this kettle.
Close supervision is necessary when the kettle is used
near children.
• If any part of this appliance is damaged or
malfunctions, or the power cord or mains plug is
broken, do NOT use it. Seek expert assistance.
• Do not attempt to use the kettle with the base from
another model of kettle.
• Disconnect the mains supply when not in use and
before cleaning the base.
• This kettle is for indoor domestic use only. Do not use it
outdoors.
• Do not use this kettle for any purpose not covered by
the instructions.
WARNING: Contact with hot water and steam can cause
burns. Exercise care when handling this appliance!
PRELIMINARIES
Unpack the kettle and base carefully, removing all
packaging.
DESCRIPTION
When using the kettle for the first time, fill the kettle to the
MAX mark on the water level window and then boil. Pour
away the boiled water. Repeat two or three times.
The kettle is now ready for use.
USING THE KETTLE
Fill the kettle through either the lid, which can be opened
by using the lid release button, or the spout. Filling the
kettle through the spout will reduce the efficiency of the
scale filter.
The kettle must be filled to at least the MIN mark
(2 cups) on the water level window.
The kettle must not be filled above the MAX mark
(8 cups) on the water level window.

Do not fill the kettle with any more water than you need,
as this will save electricity.
To improve the quality of drinks, fresh water should be
used. Do not reboil water.
Close the lid by pushing down on the lid until it clips into
place.
Place the kettle correctly onto the base.
Plug in the base (the base should not be plugged in when
not in use) and switch on the power at the wall socket.
Switch on the kettle by pressing the ON/OFF switch down
to the ON position. The switch will not stay down unless
the kettle is placed correctly on the base.
The internal indicator light will then come on, illuminating
the interior of the kettle, showing that the kettle is on.
When the water boils, the kettle will automatically switch
off, the ON/OFF switch will return to the OFF position and
the internal indicator light will turn off.
You can switch the kettle off yourself before it boils by
pushing the ON/OFF switch back up to the OFF position.
Carefully lift the kettle by the handle and pour.
Boil-Dry Protection
The kettle is fitted with a boil-dry protection system to
prevent the kettle overheating. If the kettle is switched on
while filled with too little water, the kettle will switch off
automatically after a few seconds. Should this happen, the
kettle may have to cool down before it can be refillled and
re-used due to the safety device having to reset.
Minimizing Scale Build-up
To avoid the build-up of scale in the kettle in hard water
areas:
• Use filtered water.
• Pour away unused water. Do not let water stand
overnight in the kettle.
• Do not reboil water. Reboiling water will increase the
3
amount of scale deposited in the kettle from the water.
If scale does build up, descale the kettle as described in
the DESCALING section.
CLEANING
Before cleaning, switch off, unplug the base and let the
kettle cool down completely.
Do NOT immerse any part of the base or kettle in water.
4
Wipe with a damp cloth and then dry thoroughly. Keep the
connection points between the kettle and the base dry.
5
You may use a mild detergent but, if you do so, be sure to
6
rinse the inside of the kettle out thoroughly before using
again.
7
8
Do not use scouring pads, abrasives or harsh cleaners as
they will cause scratches.
Cleaning the scale filter
The spout is fitted with a scale filter which filters scale
particles out of the water as it is poured through it.
To clean the scale filter:
• Open the lid and unclip the scale filter from the inside
of the spout by pushing down and pulling away from
the spout.
• Rinse the scale filter under the tap or clean with a soft
brush.
• Replace the filter by positioning the 'V' notch onto the
locating lug, below the spout, inside the kettle and clip
both sides of the filter pushing into place. See the
illustration over the page.
You may also clean the filter by dropping it into the kettle
while it is being descaled.
